Nonjust my opinion from watching the games week after week
I'll just put the referee but he represents the staff

Terry McAulay
Mike Carey

upper average
Bill Leavy
Gene Steratore
Scott Green
average average
Walt Coleman
Walt Anderson
Ron Winter
John Parry
below average
Tony Corrente
bottom three
Jerome Boger
Pete Morelli
Jeff Triplette
there are a few more but they're unranked right now -
wildcats20Sorry, but this will turn into a bitching fest that is not needed.
-
justincredibleI'm going to move it back until it does. It is a legit thread, officiating is awful overall in the NFL.
-
wildcats20It won't last 10 posts.
-
justincredibleProbably not, but I'll give it a shot.
In general, I agree with your list. I don't really like Carey or Hochuli, though. -
AutomatikWhos the guy that always has a detailed explanation after a review?
-
GoChiefsSerious question..who was officiating the Steelers/Jets game?
-
NonHochuli usually explains more than most. Not sure if that's who you're thinking of.
-
NonMorelli did the Steelers/Jets game but to be honest my list would've been the same if I had posted this last week.
-
GoChiefsHad nothing to do with your list, I was just curious.
-
NonI know I just added that for clerification, not at you specifically.

Commander of AwesomeWho refed the Miami Pitts game from earlier this season?
Also who refed the Seahwaks Steelers SB? For some reason Carey comes to mind for that game, but not sure. -
SonofanumpHere is a link to find out who officiated which games.

I'll answer any questions that I can. I work a little NFL rules, but I am mostly NCAA and arena. -

It was Bill Leavy. He admitted that he incorrectly called the low block on the Seahawks QB. Any of the other questionable calls in that game had nothing to do with him. -

j_crazymy least favorite is gene steratore.

thedynasty1998I was actually thinking about a play the other day that was one of the worst calls I've seen. I think there was a deep pass down the sideline in a Browns game and Derek Anderson was standing on the sideline. The ref is running down the sideline and is out of bounds and is following a deep pass in the air. He runs straight into Anderson, who is standing outside of the white (where he's supposed to be). Anderson barely moves and the ref buckles and falls back.
Ref gets up and throws a flag for a sideline penalty. Just an absolutely horrible call, but because the ref was embarrassed he throws a flag.
I don't know many NFL refs names, but it was a bad one and there are at least 2-3 calls a game where you just can't comprehend what they were thinking.
Was actually one last night where they called pass interference on a Chicago defender, when he was in great position for an INT, but was pushed by the offensive player. -

Actually, players are required to be 12 feet off the field. Coaches may be in the box that is 6-12 feet from the sideline. -
Ironman92I don't think Carey is very good....he seems to get a lot of TV time
Winters has had some real bad games as well
Why Jeff Triplette has a job in the NFL is beyond me. -

I agree with you I don't like Carey or Hochuli much but its more of their voices and just how they talk that I don't like. I think they are both pretty decent refs and explain things very well. -
RotinajAm i the only person that only knows like 4 guys?? It seems crazy to me that you would know that many different officials to be able to rank them.
-
NonI think most are familiar with the faces when they see them, I just happen to know the names from watching a lot.
There are a few that I don't know enough about. Carl Cheffers, Clete Blakeman, etc. -

I agree. The only ref I know is Hochuli. I watch football games to watch the athletes perform, not to watch the refs make calls. In my opinion the best ref in any sport is the ref that is pretty much unknown. There are definitely refs out there who think the people come to see them make calls, but they are mostly in the NBA. -
justincredibleIf I know their name it means they've been terrible in too many games that I've watched.
-
NonI would agree with a lot of that, the best refs are the ones that go unnoticed but unfortunately there are a lot of games that I'm noticing the refs based on questionable calls or just plain blown calls.
So then if there is a game that I don't notice them, I'll look to see who that ref was and give them more credit.
I always thought Hochuli had a good track record but that one major error tarnished an otherwise solid career.
