It's a different story if he's diving in to beat a tackle while trying to score (ala Polamalu yesterday), that's legal. Even if Jackson dives straight forward he gets called for the penalty because there wasn't anyone with in five yards of him.
In college, yes. Not in the NFL. -

I've seen it called in the NFL this year, unsportsman like conduct.TBone14;600270 wrote:In college, yes. Not in the NFL. -
SonofanumpHere is the NCAA rules, The NFL does not publish theirs on line and I do not have a source.
ARTICLE 1. There shall be no unsportsmanlike conduct or any act
that interferes with orderly game administration on the part of players,
substitutes, coaches, authorized attendants or any other persons subject to
the rules, before the game, during the game or between periods.
a. Specifically prohibited acts and conduct include:
1. No player, substitute, coach or other person subject to the rules shall
use abusive, threatening or obscene language or gestures, or engage
in such acts that provoke ill will or are demeaning to an opponent, to
game officials or to the image of the game, including but not limited
to:
(a) Pointing the finger(s), hand(s), arm(s) or ball at an opponent, or
imitating the slashing of the throat.
(b) Taunting, baiting or ridiculing an opponent verbally.
(c) Inciting an opponent or spectators in any other way, such as
simulating the firing of a weapon or placing a hand by the ear to
request recognition.
(d) Any delayed, excessive, prolonged or choreographed act by
which a player (or players) attempts to focus attention upon
himself (or themselves).
(e) An unopposed ball carrier obviously altering stride as he
approaches the opponent’s goal line or diving into the end zone.
(f) Removal of a player’s helmet before he is in the team area
(Exceptions: Team, media or injury timeouts; equipment
adjustment; through play; between periods; and during a
measurement for a first down).
(g) Punching one’s own chest or crossing one’s arms in front of the
chest while standing over a prone player.
(h) Going into the stands to interact with spectators, or bowing at the
waist after a good play.
If committed while the ball is alive, these fouls are treated as dead-ball
fouls.
2. After a score or any other play, the player in possession immediately
must return the ball to an official or leave it near the dead-ball spot.
This prohibits:
(a) Kicking, throwing, spinning or carrying (including off of the
field) the ball any distance that requires an official to retrieve it.
(b) Spiking the ball to the ground [Exception: A forward pass to
conserve time (Rule 7-3-2-d)].
(c) Throwing the ball high into the air.
(d) Any other unsportsmanlike act or actions that delay the game. -
killer_ewokGreat talent but he's a dumbass on the field. Didn't he drop the ball before he actually crossed the goal line and scored vs. Dallas a year or two ago? And another stunt similar to that in the Army All-American game when he was in High School?
It's gonna end up costing them a game at some point. -

No, you're wrong. Diving into the endzone IS NOT a penalty in the NFL, regardless if it was necessary or not.
In college, yes. NFL, no. -

This x100
Its a douchebag thing to do, but not illegal in anyway shape or form -
Con_AlmaUnsportsmanlike conduct is a subjective call by the official. The dive in and of itself is not a penalty but if deemed as being performed in an attempt to be unsportsmanlike the official is very much able to penalize the player.

Agreed part II, but I don't mind a bit of celebrating with your teammates.
What Jackson did was textbook douchebag. There was no reason to dive backwards into the endzone, he easily could have screwed it up (and has A HISTORY of screwing up celebrations) and possibly could have hurt himself. Jerome Bettis said it best in his CNNSI article - Jackson put himself above the team and this isn't anything to be celebrated. Guy screwed up. If this is the "best celebration" then the NFL needs better fans. -
Manhattan BuckeyeSorry, meant to post the article link:
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/writers/jerome_bettis/12/13/desean-jackson-celebration/index.html
Bettis gets it 100% correct. This wasn't about a player "having fun", it was a player showing up the other team for a lame backdive. He was lucky just to get a 15-yarder. -
Hb31187Old timers seem to get their panties in a bunch about guys having fun and doin a lil taunting. You dont like im scoring, dont let him run 90 yards off an out route on a gimp leg for a TD
Much the same as "If you dont want the other team running the score up and being unsportsmanlike....stop them" -

Yeah, I think that analogy fails. One of them is more about playing the game, the other is not being a jackass.Hb31187;601129 wrote:Old timers seem to get their panties in a bunch about guys having fun and doin a lil taunting. If criticizing D-Jax for his idiotic behavior makes me having my panties in a wad. My panties are in a wad. The only thing dumber than D-Jax' behavior are the people defending it. He looked like an idiot, he admitted he looked like an idiot and said it won't happen again, and my guess is Andy Reid told him not to do it again. -
Hb31187I was talking about Bettis not you before you.
And its the exact same as running the score up. Its douchebag thing to do, its not needed, and it can be stopped by you playing better defense and not allowing the other team to be a douche and rub it in by scoring, or scoring in style -
Manhattan BuckeyeThat made no sense at all. So if I'm running to the endzone whip out my [expletive] and wave it at the defense, that can be stopped by better defense?
Perhaps, I guess, but I'm the one that made the decision to whip it out. No one on the defense told D-Jax to stop, taunt them and jump backwards into the endzone. The defense didn't "allow" D-Jax to be a douche. D-Jax chose to be a douche.
If you don't understand that, converstaion is over. I don't know how else to describe it. -
Hb31187You can be stopped by the defense by not allowing you to even get to the End zone to celebrate in the first place, not sure why thats so confusing
-

I think he is saying that trying to score and score as much as possible is the object of the game. Being a douche is not the object of the game. -
