No need to get Votto right now. He's here for three more years anyways...maybe after next year look to get an extension.

Great news about Bruce! Awesome that he'll be around for quite awhile!

Thank god, my Jay Bruce jersey is good for another 6 years! Phew!
  • darbypitcher22
    that's a lot more than I thought he'd get
  • jordo212000
good. This is something you have to do if you are small market. Offer long extensions when the players are still relatively poor :) and hope they leap at it

    Very nice!!

I think Votto deserves to get paid now to. NL MVP made 525k last year.
  • stroups
Not a bad deal..... here is to hoping he stays healthy
  • ernest_t_bass
AWESOME! Would hate to see them not AT LEAST match this for Votto.
  • Nate
    Love it.

They are said to already be trying to talk to Votto about an extension

That's exactly why it's time to try to sign him now, the Reds have the upperhand at this time. He can either make a nominal salary for the next 3 years or get paid now. The closer you get to the end of the contract, the more leverage Votto has.
  • Mooney44Cards
Votto will be making much more than he was making last year because he is arbitration eligible anyways, just not nearly as much as he would make with a new contract.
  • gerb131
Nice. Bruce will only get better and better.
  • Nate
Even if Joey has 3 years left, I sign him for 3 more years and up it big time. We need Joey Votto. We don't want to lose him to the Yanks or Sox in 3 years. Votto and Bruce are essentially to any future of the Reds being successful.

Overpaid Jay Bruce. Who would you all rather have? Jay Bruce or Shin Shoo Choo?
  • SportsAndLady
Sorry but 51 mill over 6 years in today's MLB is not overpaying

How do you expect them to get Choo? haha

This was a very good deal for the Reds. Go look at Jason Werth's contract

    Is this a serious question?

Jay Bruce is like 5 years younger, hits for more power, is a better right fielder, and hasn't even had his best year yet.

Jay Bruce is a nice player and I really like him, plus he has great potential. But right now if I have a choice, I take Choo every time. Great blend of power, hitting, and speed.

He is 5 years older yes, but he is only 28. (That speaks to how young Bruce actually is)

The only thing that Bruce has on Choo is age. In time, because of his age he could pass Choo in other categories, but not now.

He hits for the same power and slugging. Less RBI, less doubles, less steals, less BA, less OBP. more Ks, less BB, not as good an arm. Fielding is not entirely comparable, but both are very good. Choo is well above average, Ive not seen Bruce in the field enough.

Jay Bruce will beat Shin Soo Choo in about every offensive category in 2011. Write that down.

Average - Choo. I doubt Bruce ever hits .300 and that is what Choo has hit every year hes been up
OBP - Choo. He will be at .400 again.
OPS - Toss up. Ill go Bruce. His slugging will be higher than Choos compared to Choos OBP being higher than Bruce.
HR - Bruce. He can hit over 30, Choo will max out at 25 in a good year
SLG - Bruce. Because of the HR
RBI - Ill go with Choo. This is close, but the edge goes to the 3 hole hitter versus the 5 spot. 20 more for Choo this year and thats tough to make-up
    SB - Choo. Not close.
BB - Choo. Again, I doubt its close. Choo is going to be pitched around more and more.
K - Choo. Bruce can level his Ks off quite a bit, but I doubt its down to less than Choo, who I expect to be up as he presses a bit. This will be close.
2B - Toss up. Choo will get his 30, but I think Bruce can do that as well.

Thats my thoughts going into the season.

Choo has a better arm than Bruce Bruce?? ur crazy!!
