There's no way we could have kept Victor or signed him this offseason. No matter how much he liked the city wasn't going to make him not take that deal. I won't be surprised if he stops catching by the end of next season and solely becomes a 1B/DH.
Not this off season, but there was a time when Martinez could have been extended rather than wasting money on a DH who can't play the field or inking a #3 pitcher to a long term contract while ignoring the Aces of the staff. The sad truth is that since 2007, everything Mark Shapiro touiched turned to shit.
It's tough being an Indians fan today...watching your favorite players in the prime of their careers being dumped for the owner's bottom line. It's harder than back in the old days...when we didn't have shit and didn't expect anything and didn't care. How does Paul Dolan sleep at nite? ....watching his pitchers playing for someone else and leading those teams to championships? Doesn't that get him upset at all? Doesn't he feel cheated by MLB, and the system that 'forced' him to trade these guys...by his GM who traded those guys for a lot of if/comes, and "A" ball players with bad arms?
I give the Tiger's Illyitch a lot of credit for at least trying and not being afraid to take a loss to keep his team competitive. The guy is out there spending some cash to make his teram better....he's not just sitting back and hoping the stars align and his young players can come together for one season and make a run at the playoffs before they all have to be traded for more prospects.
C'mon Paul...be an owner.
...and you know what...I don't care about 'Snow days' or the "Batterhorn"...what I care about is watching a team that's competitive and fun to watch. I'm not interested in seeing Jason Donald not make another play. I'm not interested in a DH that has turned into a singles hitter. I'm not interested in seeing AAAA guys paraded thru the rotation.. I'm not interested in turning outfielders into 3rd basemen, or left fielders into 1st basemen, or 2nd base by committee. I'm not interested in Matt La Porta's .225 batting average, or watching players struggle to set new lows for offensive offense. How many guys did we have chasing the Mendoza line?
...and I'm not going to sled ride down the bleachers, even if that's the only way you can fill them.
Why does Mark Shapiro have a job?
