Does Marvin Lewis Get A Free Pass?

So, shitty bandwagon/fair weather fans deserve to see their team win a championship more so than fans who are actually loyal and support their team all the time? -
Puddle JumperSingletary and Lewis should be canned.Singletary talks a good game but he is a fraud.Lewis probably should have been fired on the Bengal bye week.
Why fire Lovie? The Bears are atleast in contention. -

The idea that fans "deserve" a championship is insane. And faulting a fanbase for not wanting to see a shitty team/product is dumb.like_that;571425 wrote:This was a piss poor response IMO.

Yeah there are teams like Cleveland that sell tickets dispite being terrible but I wouldn't hold it against Clevelanders if they didn't want to spend a ton of money to watch shitty football (this year it hasn't actually been shitty football but the example holds).
I don't go to Steelers games because I don't have much money does that make me a shitty fan? -
friendfromlowryI Wear Pants;571358 wrote:This is a dumb way to think IMO.
I agree. So now the validity of a fanbase is reflected by how many games they sell out. FWIW, the Bengals had a larger attendance this week than the Rams did. Does that mean the Rams deserve to have a shitty team forever also? Two weeks ago when the Bengals hosted the Steelers and the Browns hosted the Patriots, the Browns had 600ish more fans show up than the Bengals did, so it's not like this is the story of the season.
My viewpoint is that I wouldn't go to a game if they were giving away free tickets and I lived 5 minutes away. It's not that I stopped supporting my team - I still watch the games when they're on TV, wear my Bengals shirts, and am on here arguing about them. But I refuse to sacrifice the several hours involved to watch a bunch of players who don't care. They don't care, why should I? I actually went to my first game last season (I acquired tickets in July, long before the season started and they were exceeding expectations) - it was the Texans game. The whole process actually was a pain in the ass - two hours of driving, getting into Cincinnati, paying an arm and a leg for the parking, tickets, beer, sitting in the stadium an hour before the game started, then the time it took to get out of Cincinnati. And the Bengals played with the same bonehead style they still do. Decent at times, but in the second half the defense fell apart, the offense was awful, Marvin challenged dumb plays (usually it's the opposite, normally he's challenging 2nd & 1 conversions with 13 minutes left in the half) My point is, I get that the expensive, pain in the ass process is the same for any stadium in America, and it's part of being a fan. But if I had done all that yesterday, only to watch them give up 35 points to the Bills? I would have started a fucking riot. It's not a one-way street. I don't just show up and pay the money to watch a bunch of pricks who don't care. That has nothing to do with loyalty.
The take-home message is that Bengals fans are hardly fair-weather. The team has been awful for 20 years. There is no good. Not many other teams can boast that. Usually they have a season or two of success or promising, young players. No, not the Bengals. The team AND coaching staff is old and washed up.
Your comments are amusing being a Browns fan, though. I'm the last guy you'll find here doubting the Browns as a fanbase. I know a lot of fans and they're always strong in support. But my how the tone of this place changes through the season. When the season started and they were 1-5 or whatever, it was nothing but gloom & doom. Fans promising to give up, stop caring, who will the Browns draft with the #1 pick, they could very well go 0-16, etc. If I cared enough I'd look up the Jets thread from last week and see how optimism changed to the sky is falling over the course of a few hours. And I realize that's just calling it as it is, but if you wanna talk about fair-weather. People are always threatening to stop caring when the Browns are down, but when they win a few games, their threads are suddenly so popular. -

I think it is insane that you think the notion of fans "deserving" to witness a championship is insane. Loyal fans, put in time and money into watching their teams play. A lot of that money and time goes into the players paycheck. Yeah, you are damn right I think teams with a loyal fan base are more deserving of witnessing a championship than a fair weather/bandwagon fan base. You are out of your mind if you think a fanbase like the cardinals fanbase (their official fan club was finally created after the SB appearnace) deserve to see a title more so than a fanbase like Cleveland, GB, or Buffalo.

Now you are taking my post out of context. The bengals fan base has had a history of being fair weathered and terrible. I am not just basing this off of just last week's blacked out game.
As for the rest of your mumbo jumbo, all I have to say is good story. Excuses are crutches for the weak, doesn't change the fact Bengals fans are one of the worst in the NFL.
As for your comments regarding Browns fans, yeah we go from pessimistic to optimistic, that is what happens when you actually stick with your team, you experience all the emotions. lol nice try with calling Browns fans fair weathered. Every Browns thread I have seen this season has received a lot of views and posts. The fact of the matter is the people who say they are going to give up on the team (although I didn't really see any of that, so proof please) ended up watching the game the next week and also posted on the game thread. Nice stretch there. Sorry to upset you about bengals fans, but sometimes the truth hurts. -

So you're comparing a team thats coming off a division title and playoff appearance the previous year, to a team that had the worst record in the league the previous year and trying to pass it off as a good argument? -
Manhattan BuckeyeMarvin Lewis likely won't return, whether it is the Bengals canning him or him leaving. For Bengals fans, the question to ask is if the potential is still there. IMO it isn't. A playoff appearance now and then is fine (I'm sure Lions fans would appreciate that), but we have probably seen the maximum performance of the franchise under his watch. If the fans want more, his time is over.
-
Art Modellhahahaaaaa. It's great to be a Steelers fan.
-
Little DannyThe only reason Marvin has a job still in Cincinnati is because Mike Brown is too cheap to fire him before his contract runs out (which it does at the end of the season by the way). For all the Bengals fans hoping for an experienced coach (the pipe dream guys like Cowher, Chuckie, Marty Shottenheimer) to come in and run the show you will be out of luck. Mike Brown will not hire a coach who will want to do it his way. Look for Mike Zimmer to get the HC job next season.

Art, if Zimmer does not get a job, I would not be surprised to see Brown take a crack at Chilly or some other guy who just got canned (Wade Philips?). -

I can understand going to games and still pumping money into bad teams like the Browns who while normally inept seem to try to get better (they've had many coaches, GMs, QB, etc changes since they came back) but if for instance, the Indians are still as bad as they've been the last ten or so years and the management still refuses to put any money into the team or even attempt to keep talent then I'd say anyone going to a game is probably a bit daft.like_that;571536 wrote:I think it is insane that you think the notion of fans "deserving" to witness a championship is insane. There's a difference between being bad and not trying. The Browns are bad (not so much this year), the Indians don't even try. -

I already explained why you can't compare football to baseball and basketball. -
I Wear PantsYou can because football is much more expensive than either. Going to one football game costs a ton more than going to a baseball game.
The fan base isn't bad simply because you don't sell out a game. -

Cool stats LAST YEAR. But right now (hence me talking about this week, not last season), the Bengals are probably the most disappointing team in the NFL. The Rams vastly improved, have young talent worth the price of admission, and despite their losing record are still in contention to win the division and make the playoffs (it's a shitty division, but it is what it is). -

Okay well let me know when you have something concrete to prove how the Bengals are a terrible fanbase other than a couple showings of bad attendance. I can't really debate your genius reasoning of "The bengals fan base has had a history of being fair weathered and terrible." and "Excuses are crutches for the weak, doesn't change the fact Bengals fans are one of the worst in the NFL." Good argument Aristotle. Do ever back up anything you claim or is it all "just because"?
It's funny: other fanbases are fair-weathered, but the Browns fans "experience all the emotions" --- Oh I didn't know there was a difference, like I said, thanks for the enlightenment. -

LOL we're not talking about the quality of the teams, but the quantity of ticket sales. Being as the majority of tickets are season tickets which are sold BEFORE the season starts, couldn't we then surmise that the previous year DOES in fact affect ticket sales? -

Agreed. Most people who are not from Cincinnati parrot the talking points that all Cincinnati sports fans are bandwagon fans. What they don't know is that despite putting on a product that has only produced two winning seasons in twenty years, Bengals fans for some reason still show up to the games. Bengals fans still wear their orange and black and hope that the next season will be the one to turn it all around. If anything I will say the Bengal fans are perhaps the most loyal in Cincinnati, to an extent to a fault(in a year in which the Reds won their division there were nights when they couldn't fill half of GABP). -

No its called look at the amount of Blackouts the bengals have experienced in winning + losing seasons. 8 games a year, a black out is inexcusable when your team is in the playoffs/playoff hunt (referring to last season here).
