I think the average in this soccer is league is in fact, pretty good.

    I do believe it's around 16,500.

the crew stadium was built with out public funding, the crew built the stadium with private funds.

The Crew are not league average. They're averaging around 13K a game this year. League average is about 16K. The Seattle Sounders get 36K a game at their stadium. The problem is that even if the Crew were league average that wouldn't be good. You know why? BECAUSE THE CREW ARE NOT AN AVERAGE TEAM. They won the championship a couple years ago (unlike any other Ohio pro team) and they've been one of (if not THE) best teams in the MLS the last few years. The city of Columbus does not deserve to bitch about getting an NBA or NFL or any other team until they start supporting the teams they already have.

Washington is an outlier, the next closest is 20k . Columbus has on average, had average attendance.

Maybe Columbus people don't fancy soccer.

Considering MLS is the 13th highest attended soccer league in the world, the biggest issue is the lack of television revenue and the ticket prices are a bit lower. However, having their own stadium makes up, quite a bit, for it. Crew Stadium was the first major soccer stadium built in this country. Now, Los Angeles, Dallas, RSL, Colorado, Chicago, New York, Toronto, and Philadelphia have their own stadiums). Kansas City's stadium is under construction. San Jose and Houston both have plans to build a stadium. DC is really the only odd-man-out in MLS. Seattle and New England share their stadium with the NFL half-brother. Unfortunately, Foxboro is not centrally located or easy to get to and through in the Krafts not really caring and you have bad attendance.

As for the Crew themselves, they've had their stadium now for their twelfth season. The team never had 'great' attendance. But, that wasn't the point of the stadium. It was to collect all the revenue and also be able to use the venue for other things (concerts, high school games, lacrosse games, rugby games, etc). And has been quite successful. The 'team' may not turn a profit, but the stadium surely has turned a profit that more than offsets the team itself if you separate the two.

I am surprised Nationwide does not have an arena football team in there for the spring. I'd think the following would be there with a few ex-Buckeyes playing for them.

Yeah, and the Columbus owners decided rather than wait it out, just to fold. As did several other owners. Although several teams that took an additional year off are coming back (Kansas City, San Jose, Philadelphia, etc).

Somebody i know very close to the Cols AFL team told me the franchise was absolutely hemorraging money and the biggest expense was the Nationwide Arena lease which they tried to re-negotiate but NA Mgt wouldn't budge.

Obviously the biggest expense was the lease. And are you sure you are not thinking of the Blue Jackets?

The lower level arena football team was going to play at the fairgrounds last year, but then relocated back to Marion.

The jackets are quietly playing some nice hockey. 3-0 on the road and 5-3 overall. Keep it up guys. Win and all this kind of talk goes away very quickly.
