Footie fans any thoughts or opinions on this somewhat shocking news?

    wow.....kind of surprisingly open discussion from Sir Alex;

just one season from being the toast of the EPL, and the face of Man U; this is surprising.
will be interesting to hear Rooney's perspective.

I'm sure the new US ownership with a lot of money to throw around will look at bringing Rooney to Liverpool......... among many other speculations...
...Rooney returns to hometown and plays for clubs on both sides of the Mersey in his career.

I don't see him going to the continent to play.
  • Automatik
Ohhhh snap! I didn't see this coming. I wonder where he'll end up? You know he won't go anywhere below the Big 4 in the EPL....maybe headed for Spain?

He is one of my favorite players in the game, playing for one of my most despised teams. This is good news!

Ive been reading a lot over the last 2 weeks about him moving to Real Madrid (possible swap with someone on Madrid) or Man City. Morinuho said he doubts Rooney would be sold in January....but didnt skirt around the fact that Madrid is looking at him.

It does seem like Madrid would be the most likely of destinations and I would also throw Barca into the mix. I simply don't see Sir Alex letting him go to one of their domestic rivals and the Liverpool talk above is nonsense, hes absolutely hated by both the red and blue of merseyside. Also think it was interesting that Ancelotti all ready came out and declared his interest in the striker, could we possible see him at Chelsea?

Im with you. Most logical place is Madrid. I dont know if Barca would happen or if they are even interested (obviously, everyone is interested in that kind of talent, but thats not what I mean). They just got a new president. Rosell doesnt want to get too many foreigners (which has pissed of enough people) and they just signed David Villa but didnt have enough money to get Cesc (or werent willing to part with said money).

All of that, to me, says not Barca. I think they are content with the strike-force of Villa, Pedro, Messi, Iniesta with guys like Bojan and Jeffren for depth. Now they could use a lot more able bodies on their squad, but spending the money on Rooney might not be the best course to get those bodies.

City came out today and said they're willing to let Tevez walk, and there's been speculation that City and Rooney already have had a contract lined up since before the World Cup. He wouldn't have to move his family, etc.

He's going to either City or Madrid, with Chelsea as a long-shot. I don't see him agreeing to go to Liverpool, given their current state....but I definitely expect United to target Torres (who wants to leave LFC) if Rooney does escape.

I agree though, crazy downfall. SAF, by all accounts, was damn near crestfallen by Rooney's betrayal to the club, after all they've done for him.

City must be run by apes if they are going to let Tevez walk. He is City, and has been since the turnover of owners.

The rumors I have heard says Tevez wants out of city. Rooney to City is pretty much going to happen. Rooney's wife has came out and said they need to keep her sister where she is comfortable and that is in the Manchester hospital where she is currently treated and wouldnt trust taking her overseas. Man U is okay up top with Hernandez and Beratov I dont think they will be spending the kinda money it would take to get Torres.

If your strikers are Berbatov and Hernandez, you aint winning many titles.

This did come as a surprise to me especially with Rooney's personal life splattered all over the English tabloids. The one club and manager that has a proven track record at dealing with over the top off the field issues has been Man U and Sir Alex. IMO, there's no way in hell that Rooney is sold to an English club, Ferguson is a cunning business man when it comes to these type of transfers. He will take less and send him to Spain.

Two things that IMO will not happen.......there's no way Rooney is sold to Man City and there's no way Liverpool would sell Torres to Man U. I saw a stat/fact that Man U and Liverpool have done one transfer to each other in the last 50 plus years or something to that effect. The hate runs deep between Man U and Liverpool/Man U and Man City.

Ferguson will need to sell Rooney this January as it was revealed that Rooney has a 5 million pound buyout clause after this season in his contract.

I agree Rock, I don't see Rooney being dealt within the premiere league, especially to those top 4 teams. But you can't knock the credit of mrs rooney coming out and saying she wanted to stay in the city of Manchester, and the only viable option is city. I guess we will wait and see, although I hope he stays in the premiere league personally.

    Fixed.

I would bet on Chelsea, with Madrid #2. I wouldn't really expect him to leave the EPL.

While the Mrs. Rooney stories are out there, in the end it's the British press. Maybe she stays behind by herself because she's fed up with Wayne's sexual exploits? We will see but if he's dealt to Man City then IMO, it shows SAF has lost a step.
  • Murdski99
^ Agreed thats why I juss cant see him being dealt to city. That would officially shift the balance of power to City as the BIG club in Manchester and I honestly think Fergie would off himself before letting that happen.
  • sportchampps
I think Rooney's contract it up after this year and he can choose where he goes can't he. Berbatov has been at least in the top 4 strikers in the premiere league this season with Maluda, Drogba, and Tevez. Hernandez just keeps scoring goals every time he plays and is young. Man U is not winning anything this year with or without Rooney. I just cant see Rooney leaving England, English players have been known to fall apart outside the premiere league except for maybe Beckhams one good year in Spain. I don't think I can even name 5 English players who have been successful outside of England. Rooneys style just doesnt fit a spanish team
  • Sage
    He'll go to City.

Also, Everton has a 25% sell-on clause from their deal to send Rooney to ManU in 2004.
  • rock_knutne
Looks like the Rooney's will definitely stay in Manchester and remain on the "red" side of town. Wayne pens a new 5 year contract with United:

Unreal how these football stories end. I'm also glad to see that SAF hasn't lost his touch, the only way Rooney was to remained in England was with United, just couldn't see SAF selling him to Chelsea or City.
  • Murdski99
Interesting news, not sure what to take out of this whole ordeal. But highly doubtful that Rooney will see out the new contract.
  • Laley23
I dont know if this is too keep him at ManU, or to make him more marketable if they dont sell in January. The transfer fee will be MUCH higher with a 5 year deal tied to Rooney versus the 1 year he had left.
