Derek Jeter vs Tampa Bay last night

  So I'm listening to Mike & Mike this morning and this is one of their topics...apparently, last night in the 7th(?) inning of the Rays/Yanks game Jeter gets hit by a pitch. His spins around in pain as the ball apparently hit his wrist. The ump signals him to go to 1st. On the replay it clearly shows that the ball hit the knob of the bat and made no contact with Jeter so he faked it. The next batter homered. Luckily the Rays came back with a 2 run shot to win it.
  
  Golic is defending Jeter in saying it was a "heads up" play and kickers, soccer players & basketball players all take dives to get calls and receivers/outfielders will raise a ball up that they trapped hoping to get the call.
  
  E-mailers are sending in e-mails hating on Golic saying that Jeter's act is "as bad as Reggie Bush taking money", "as bad as Golic taking steroids in his career" and asking Golic "what, do you teach your kids to cheat on tests too?"
  
  They were also talking about whether this act will tarnish Jeter's pristine reputation.
  
  So I ask....was Jeter's act just a part of the game or should he be villified for being, as the e-mailers said, a cheater?
  
  BTW...Jeter admitted to a reporter that the ball didn't hit him and said "it's my JOB to get on base. What was I supposed to tell the ump, I don't want my base?"

  The ump gave Jeter the base. He did the smart thing by taking it.

  It's one thing to accept your base when the ump made a bad call. Its another to pretend like you got hit to get a call. Jeter is a puss.

  But if Ohio State's (I use this as an example because I know they are a team you root for from the previous thread) punter takes a dive and is awarded a penalty that extends a drive that leads to a game winning TD it's "nice acting job", right?

  I see NO problem with it.
  
  If the umpire is dumb enough to make the mistake, why should the player not take advantage of it?
  
  And it's not like Jeter didn't feel anything, he felt the vibration from the ball hitting the knob of the bat which, on a 90+ MPH pitch, is still not exactly a pleasant feeling.

  And this is where Greenberg brought up the case for where this would be a perfect example of where they should use instant replay.

  No, still a puss and noting pisses me off more than a dive and it getting rewarded. The ref is standing right there he should be able to tell the difference between the two.

  You would feel a thump and it might give you a scare but it doesn't hurt when its off the handle. If he was acting as if he was just hit by the pitch, he is a liar and a pussy.
  
  I am not sayin you don' take your base when you are awarded a base you didn't earn but I am saying you are a liar and a pussy if you jump around acting like you were just hit with a pitch you didn't.

  I dunno, he dropped the bat before it got hit. Not sure he felt ANYTHING in this instance.

  In a post game interview he basically said he didn't feel anything.

  Nothing wrong. Tight, important, game and Jeter needs to get on ANY way he can....Heads up play. And hell it may have actually stung. I'd like to ask when any of you have taken a 90mph pitch off a wooden bat since some of you seem to know how it feels. I have no idea but I know coincidentally yestrday I held a board while someone smacked it with a sledghammer and it fucking stung the shit out my hands. Could be similar with a wooden bat and ball. I doubt it is but I have no idea b/c I've never hit with a wooden bat but just sayin'.

  I've taken 80mph pitches off handles of metal and wood. Scared me but didn't hurt.

  They actually mentioned on air during the broadcast (my roomie is from Jersey and a diehard Yanks fan and had remote control privileges last night) that it actually would have taken less time to check a replay than it took for the umpires to huddle up and make the decision.
  
  
  Bases loaded, in HS my bat got hit on the handle and I can tell you that it stung, but that was also probably because I don't use batting gloves.

  I don't like Jeter but I see no problem with what he did. If it's gonna get me a free base I do the same thing in that situation. No different than an outfield trapping the ball and raising his glove as if he caught the ball or a phantom tag by an infielder selling to the ump that he tagged the runner.

  The part that was cracking me up were the e-mailers implying that Golic was some kind of evil, sinister creature for seeing nothing wrong with what Jeter did. I mean the "do you teach your kids how to cheat in school" comment was classic. Dumbasses...

  They did mention that Jeter could get "payback" in the form of a beanball the next time these teams meet or not given a close call by an ump that he (Jeter) may have shown up.

  Yeah, no way that hurt. He wasnt even holding the bat when he got hit. I have no clue how Barksdale missed this call.

  Love how he plays it off like he's innocent. Meanwhile he's jumping around in fake pain and having the trainer examine his arm. With all the talent they buy every season, it's hard to believe they have to resort to this to get on base (and then still lose)
