Triple Crown?

  • hoops23
Going over the #'s and I'm surprised nobody is really talking about this...

Albert Pujols currently leads the NL in homers and RBI and is currently hitting .316

The league leader in BA is Joey Votto at .320

This is probably the closest we've been to seeing somebody actually win the Triple Crown. It seems Pujols is really starting to heat up as well.

He is certainly in the thick of things for it. I think he is hurt (media wise) but such a low number leading the league in BA and the RBI/HR totals are pretty pedestrian to what he have come accustomed to. Also the fact that the AL guys are having much better years at the top than the NL guys.

On that note, and it is pretty tough at this point to happen. But Miguel Cabrera leads in RBI, and is .015 behind in BA and 7 in HR.

Cabrera really got hurt with the injuries the Tigers had as teams have been able to pitch around him much more. He has gotten hot again and could make a run at it still.

Pujols is right there as well amd imo, he and Cabrera are the two best hitters in baseball today.

Pujols will have to hold off Ryan Howard in RBI

I definitely agree with this. I do think Albert is much better overall, but Miggy is definitely in the discussion.

If Votto gets hot (he could, they have 3 left with the Pirates, 4 with the DBacks, 6 against Astros, 9 with the Brewers, and 19 left overall in GABP) he could win it. His BA is already best in the league, 3 behind in HRs and only 3 back in RBIs.

Yeah the NL Triple Crown could just as easily go to Pujols as it could to Votto.
  • hoops23
I only brought this up with Pujols because he WAS leading two of the 3 categories with a 4 point deficit in BA..

That's easier to make up than 2 categories. It also seemed like Pujols was heating up.

I think the last time it was close really late was Gary Sheffield back in about 1992.....he was tight late in Sept but McGriff pulled away in HR I think and someone nipped him in avg or RBI.
  • Ironman92
    Yeah.....on Sept 18th in 1992

Sheffield was leading the NL in AVG....which he ended up winning
He was 1 HR behind McGriff
He was 2nd in RBI behind eventual leader Darren Daulton....he trailed him by 5 RBI
  • Ironman92
Pujols just hit a 3 Run HR and is at 33 HR and 92 RBI.....batting .316
  • Ironman92
    ......and another double....make that .318

Wasn't very long ago he was hitting .297 and many were wondering what was wrong
  • Ironman92
Pujols now 3-4 and hitting .319

He's gotta be past Votto in OPS now.

Did anyone see the highlight of the Cards/Pirates game that was just on ESPN??

Dude from the Pirates hit it OUT of the stadium in right field....

One guy to look out for in the batting race is Omar Infante. His average is up to .351 and is hitting .370 since June. He will have to average 4.4 plate appearances per game through the end of the season to qualify for the batting title due to him not becoming an everyday player til mid way through the season. One thing I didn't know is that if he keeps his average where its at or raises it but falls 10 at bats short of qualifying, his average will be computed with an extra 10 at bats with out hits. If these extra at bats are added and his average is still the highest in the league, he would win the batting title. A long shot for sure but you never know.

Pujols leads the National League with 33 homeruns (2nd is Dunn with 31, 3rd is Votto with 29), 92 RBI (2nd is Votto with 86, 3rd is Howard with 82), and is 3rd in average at .319 (1st is Votto at .323, 2nd is Prado at .320).

Joe Posnanski said it best "Doesn't it seem it's been a ho-hum year for Albert Pujols? Then it's late August and you notice he might win the Triple Crown"

I'm actually glad Albert doesn't play in a huge market like NY or Boston or LA. Now we can enjoy his dominance without having it crammed down out throats.

The NL is pretty subpar this year as far as hitting goes. It's pretty crazy to think less than 40 homers, 120 rbi, and .325 average could win the triple crown. All 3 of those are below Albert's career averages.

Infante will be interesting to follow.
  • karen lotz
Pujols 2-2 so far, has his average up to .322

This race is going to be insane...they are so close.

Still think Pujols will finish the year leading Votto in a category or two, but Votto will take MVP.
  • dave
What happened to the donkey? he was up quite a few homers a few weeks back.
  • Ironman92
he's faced good pitching and struck out 3 million times in 15 games....the pitchers he has owned have walked him. He needs a day off or two.

That and Pujols and Votto have ran him down like an MVP should on a contender.

to the average leaders I'll add this... if Omar Infante plays every game the remainder of the season and bats lead off, he will fall 12 at bats short of qualifying for the batting title. If you add these hitless atbats to his current totals, he is hitting .330. This assumes that the Braves don't get a perfect game thrown against them and also they don't score enough runs in any game for him to get a 5th plate appearance in any game. Its safe to assume he will get 5 PAs in a few games, as he has had a couple recently with 6, so he needs to be considered as well.
