Reds vs Marlins.....Game 1

  • Ironman92
    ugh....who will step up? Anyone

Someone or several need to as we face another 6'7 250 lb pitching monster who has a 1.97 ERA.....he's not as killer on the road....but the Reds sure didn't seem like the Reds at home....so could be rough.

The season is over. Time to pack it in and get ready for next year. The sky is falling.

This is not in response to this thread, it's in response to many Reds fans I have heard on 700wlw and over at Redszone. SMH.

I beg to differ. This is a different Reds team than the past. I fully expect them to go on a tear starting game 2 of the Florida series. The bats will be happy to be facing some schmucks instead of Major League level arms. I'd say they will head into the last week of the season with a 8 game lead on STL and this will allow them to set their rotation up for a deep run into October.

Nah I was at the Strasburg game, and I was at game 1 of Cards also. I was also at the first 2 Cubs games of the weekend, I think my overall record is 8-3.

...and for what it's worth mhs95 started the game 3 thread

With Cueto...will they appeal it to get it to 5 and then wait for a cruddy series to do it or just bring Wood back up to replace him or let Harang take his start?
  • SportsAndLady
I mean it doesn't hurt to appeal it.
  • Ironman92
no it doesn't hurt a thing

Cueto was one of the first guys out after the delay yesterday and a few Cardinal fans were giving it to him.....he just smiled

Need some positives to come from this series. At least 2 of 3. Need to stop the bleeding.

I can't even listen anymore to it, its unbearable.

How can no one that calls in just realize that we got caught up in the emotion of it all and the Cards have been in that situation before? Sweep the Marlins and we are world beaters again..
  • wildcats20
    ^^Exactly.

Also, if some way the Cubs can take 2 of 3 from the Cards this weekend, everything will be fine.
  • Azubuike24
All 3 pitching match-ups favor St. Louis.

    Diamond vs Westbrook...easily STL
    Zambrano vs Carpenter...lol
Dempster vs Garcia...maybe a chance for the Cubs here

However, I'd bank more on a Cards sweep than the Cubs taking 2 of 3. Hopefully I'm way off.
  • Iliketurtles
Marlins get the sweep and start their late season push for a playoff berth!
  • osu45804
The last 4 games including tonight the Reds will have faced Carpenter, Garcia, Wainwright & Johnson...combined records : 50-18, 2.38 ERA
  • SportsAndLady
2nd lowest ERA in the NL followed by the 1st lowest ERA in the NL. lol awesome

But if you appeal, you can't get his missed start out of the way now. If you wait until Sept when the rosters expand you won't have to play a player short on the day Cueto's replacment pitches.

The question I have is what does the Reds rotation look like?

They officially listed Saturday and Sunday as TBA.

Saturday is Mike Leake's scheduled start, but he has been taking on water big-time since June. Sunday is Johnny Cueto's scheduled start, which he will almost definitely not make.

Now, you have to figure Homer Bailey is going to start Saturday or Sunday. However, my question is, Louisville lists Travis Wood as Saturday night's starting pitcher. Why would the Reds throw Wood in AAA when they have a struggling Leake (and also on a innings count) going in the majors? This makes no sense, especially since they can just send Carlos Fisher down AGAIN. Then, to activate Bailey, they can send Wood down to AAA after Saturday's start and bring Bailey in to start Sunday.

With the off-day on Monday, it will be Arroyo, Volquez and Wood for the Arizona series, followed by Bailey/Leake, Cueto and Arroyo to finish the weekend series in Los Angeles. This has to be how the Reds do it, because if they pull the plug on Leake now, it gives them options. The worst thing they can do, at this point, is NOT start Travis Wood in the majors. I understand that when they sent him down, Cueto wasn't facing a suspension and Leake hadn't officially been ruled out, but now that those two things are present and the team is in a must-win situation every night, they HAVE to bring Wood up.

I figure they may appeal because with Wood in AAA, Leake struggling, Harang still out and Bailey's role undefined, the Reds rotation has serious question marks. By September, it could have 5-6 healthy SP's and plugging someone into Cueto's spot will be easy. Right now, they can't afford to have him miss a start unless it's Bailey or Wood who replaces him.
