So, he IS loyal and their continued support of him demonstrates their loyalty.

  Even if he "forced" the team to put them on the payroll, he's still looking out for them. I mean, if you got your buddy a job at your company, are you not really being loyal because you aren't just paying him out of your check? You helped him out, LeBron helps his boys out. For whatever the reason he or they do it, the point is all in the line, "we are not going to stand by you". Isn't that what loyalty is - standing by someone EVEN WHEN YOU DON'T AGREE (or when they've done something wrong)? His guys stand by him. He stands by his guys. Fans do NOT do that and then preach loyalty, which is totally bogus.

(I know, bring up the damn "promise" - seriously, that is a really stupid fall back). That is it, he went somewhere else when he had fulfilled his obligation.
