Dez Bryant refuses to carry Williams' pads
-
NateKudos to Bryant for telling a shitty, overhyped receiver to carry his own damn pads.
-
BigAppleBuckeyeRoy Williams: "Rookie, carry my pads!"
Dez White: "I am sorry, I only carry pads of players that don't absolutely suck balls." -
georgemc80Im apparently in the minority...but this tells me that Bryant is just like everyone made him out to be...a trouble maker. You do certain things because that is your lot in life...carrying pads for ANY veteran is his lot in life. If the Cowboys' veterans knew how to lead a team...they would take care of Bryant now. He does it (carrying the pads)once maybe twice then everyone lays off. The last thing the Cowboys need is a diva...I was just starting to think that Jerry Jones figured out that character meant something in today's game....and then he does this.....I can't wait to see the 'boys in Reliant Stadium this year.....Send the rookie over the middle...Mr. Ryans wants to meet him.

How does not wanting to screw around with other people's little games make him a trouble maker? If anything I'm looking at the so-called veteran leadership for allowing such childish practices to continue. Team building and hazing are not the same thing... the trouble is some people believe they are the same.
There's just too many "old school" people out there that believes it has a place and is helpful. -
thePITmanHopefully 2 of the 3 [Witten/Austin/Bryant] will be on my fantasy team. That's all I have to say.

I agree that it doesn't make him a trouble maker. But what is wrong with rookie hazing? To say it shows a lack of veteran leadership is just dumb. It's about letting rookies know they have to earn their dues and I see nothing wrong with it.Fly4Fun;432541 wrote:How does not wanting to screw around with other people's little games make him a trouble maker? I just find it funny that Roy Williams, who obviously was replaced by Bryant, is the one that was punked. -
Fly4FunThe problem with hazing is that it is completely unnecessary. There are ways to form unity without using hazing... heck, that's part of the coaches job. Hazing from veterans can go one of two ways. It is done with a non-malicious intent and it's no big deal or it's done with some malicious intent and deep wounds and distrust is created within the locker room. It's easier to just forgo the whole ordeal.

devil1197Yes, Bryant is a trouble maker for
a) Signing early so he can get to camp on time and beat out Williams.
b) For not doing the hazing because he is there to solely win championships and meet the teams goals.
c) Since being drafted by the Cowboys, he has probably done everything right that a new rookie should be doing.
Face it, Bryant was drafted to replace Willaims and everyone knows it. Bryant is all business and maybe Williams should take notice that he isn't fucking around. -
georgemc80I really think that Bryant may be mostly a return guy this first year.....I know that what is coming out of the metroplex at this point...returns and 25 receptions are the expectations...anything more than that is icing.
btw...carrying pads isnt a big deal at all....Bryant's approrpriate response should have been...Ok, I'll get them...then without saying a word...go take the man's job.
There is another name for "old school"...its called tradition. Who does he think he is...I mean what he caught a few balls two years ago in college? Dez Bryant shouldn't try to change NFL tradition...hopefully the Cowboy's veterans will take care of this. -

His expectations are definitely higher than 25 catches. He's going to probably finish between 50-60 depending on if he earns the starting job over Williams. If not, then 25 is much more realistic, but I can't see Roy Williams holding him off.
Remember this guy was BY FAR the best receiver in college football, as much so as Crabtree was, but a bullshit suspension and personality issues dropped him from the top 5, not any questions about talent. He's way more talented than Williams and deserves to start if he proves himself in camp. -

I agree somewhat with the first part, but it's not a rookie's place to be an agent for changing it. -
jpake1As a Cowboys fan, I don't care either way. Nothing wrong with a vet saying carry my pads and nothing wrong with a rookie saying no. I would have said the same exact thing to Williams. If a vet gets pissed, get thicker skin. I'm not here to carry your pads, I'm here to carry my weight and help in any way to become a champion. Sometimes it takes a boss to kick tradition in the ass. Maybe I'm a trouble maker like Dez Bryant because when I was a frosh and the senior guys brought their lunch trays to our table and told us to take them up I grabed them and took them right back to their table and told them they can take up their own trays.

and then they kicked your ass, internet tough guy. -
enigmaaxI'm a Cowboys fan. I'd much rather everyone else have Dez's attitude than be screwing around with rah-tarded "traditions". I find hazing, however innocent, to be lame, but it would be different is Roy Williams was a leader to begin with. Was his request a team rite of passage or just Roy Williams being a douche? I'm guessing it is the latter, which is why I don't mind Dez telling him to piss off.

I liken it to this:
You're a senior on the basketball team. You guys have an incoming freshman who is supposed to contribute heavily to the success of the team, and is talented enough to earn major minutes. Everyone on the team is excited to have him except the salty returning senior douchebag whose playing time (Roy Williams) is being taken by said freshman (Bryant). Consequently, the senior douchebag decides to haze the freshman because he's mad his playing time is being reduced to make room for the new guy. When the freshman decides not to go along with the hazing the senior gets pissed off, but no one else on the team really cares because they just want everyone to get along.
It seems that the Cowboys aren't making a stink about this, and Roy is just being a douchebag.
Maybe it's because he's been a terrible disappointment since coming from Detroit, or maybe he's just insecure, but I have absolutely no problems with Bryant's refusal. -
georgemc80We are not going to know what the Cowboys' veterans do in this case, one or the other. IF it is handled it will be something subtle to get the message across. Either way as a Texans season ticket holder, I am looking forward for both of the Cowboys visits to Reliant Stadium.
-
Tiger2003If anyone has been watching the NFL network today, some veteran players have said Bryant is in the wrong, and everyone goes through it.
-
SageYea "everybody goes through it" aka "I'm mad that I was stupid enough to do it, and I'm appalled that you're not that dumb either."
-
Hb31187The only person i heard say that Dez should of carried pads today was Schlereth or w/e and that guy is a MASSIVE douchebag
-
wildcats20I'm all for hazing, hell we had to go through it in HS.
Just carry the fuckin' pads and then play football. It's not a sign of disrespect to you Dez; you're a rookie, this is what happens to rookies.
But like has been said, it's HILARIOUS that it's Roy's pads lol -
Strapping Young LadGolic was all over Bryant too and I like him. But, yes Mark Schlereth is a HUGE DOUCHER. Fuck him. If it were I probably would have just carried the pads then tried like hell to make sure Roy Williams couldn't carry my jock this season.
However, I like the fact that Dez Bryant refused to carry the pads simply because of the audacity of Roy Fucking Williams. He should be embarrassed to act like he's worthy of having his pads carried. If I were him I'd worry solely about my game and if he can actually become a good WR this season then come back next year, tape someone to the goalpost and shave their pubes if you wish. Until then carry your own shit you bum. -

I like this post. -
karen lotzBryant suffered a high ankle sprain on the 2nd to last play of practice today and will miss 4-6 weeks.

tcarrier32what a diva.
seriously though, hazing has no place in sport. its not a tradition really, its just something that older people want to do to the younger players because they think they deserve to be waited on even more than they currently are. its a shame he got hurt, hopefully he can stay healthy after this little hiccup. -
