NHL Rejects Kovalchuk contract For salary cap circumvention

ts1227I'm interested to see how this turns out.
I would think if they fought it, the NHL would lose.
If the contract did not outright violate the CBA and simply exploited a loophole (which appears to be the case), would the NHL's stoppage hold up in court? -
End of LineI could see the NHL winning this in court.
Ever since Detroit's GM Ken Holland signed Zetterberg and Franzen to long term deals, a couple of GM's went that route. Hossa signed for 12 years same as Loungo and the NHL didn't fight those (that I know of). So who knows how this will turn out. -
TedShecklerIt's about time the NHL shut these kind of deals down. Don't forget Pronger. He has one of these deals.
-
End of LineThe 7yr-35mil deal? I don't remember if he was 35+ when he signed it though.
-
ts1227Arbitrator sided with the NHL, deal is dead.

I agree with ts1227, if the NHL doesn't have specific language in place for their salary cap procedures in the CBA outlawing these type of contracts, the NJ Devils organization has a case they could easily win in court. Although, I doubt they take it that far. -

They do have that type of language in the CBA, that's why the judge sided with them. This was obvious circumvention of the salary cap.rock_knutne;448004 wrote:I am.
