I love this debate simply because I would like to see what Tyson would have done in his prime against these guys..in their prime. Too bad he just beat a bunch of chumps.

I also agree with your list other than I would slip Joe Frasier in there instead of Dempsey.

Tyson was scary good in the 80s. I too would have liked to see him against other great boxers in different eras.

Yeah, I love just watching the knockout blow highlights of Tyson...he lit mofos up!!! I love boxing, but it seems to be down for the count...lol

Boxing hasn't been the same since Tyson lost to Douglas, Tyson could have been in that top 5. I'd put Apollo Creed above him but Clubber Lang just below.......

Ivan Drago could kick the shit out of both those guys.

Agreed Louis was #1, I wouldn't have Ali in my top 5.

I think there are so many that people haven't heard of like Harry Greb, Mickey Walker, Sam Langford, Max Baer,
etc....Honestly, I don't believe that any fighter that fought after about 1965, (heavyweight that is) would make a top 5 list.

    Here's mine

    #1 Joe Louis
    #2 Jack Dempsey
    #3 Harry Greb
    #4 Sam Langford
    #5 Jack Johnson

I also believe that if Joe Louis had never been born, our lists would look MUCH MUCH different, because Joe was so good, that the guys he beat, like Braddock, Schmeling, Ezzard Charles, Jersey Joe Walcott, Jack Sharkey, were also GREAT fighters, their only crime was fighting in the same era as Joe.

Another great fighter who jumped weight classes alot, and did some time in the HW division was Archie Moore.

My opinion is Mike Tyson would fall in somewhere in the 30s, If Cus D'Amato had lived a little longer, who knows, Tyson may have cracked the top 10.

I will say this, and laugh if you want, but I think Tyson in his prime, (with D'Amato in his corner) beats Ali in his.

I have seen the Ali/Liston fight MANY times, and I agree with those who speak of the 'Phantom Punch', I don't know if Liston's life was threatened or not, but Liston beats Ali 7 of 10 times.

I loved the way Frazier fought, but he doesn't belong in the conversation either, the fighters of the 30s, 40s and 50s, would have demolished the Ali's, Fraziers, Nortons, although I do believe that a young Foreman, in his prime, was the best of that bunch.

By the way, Rocky Marciano would be in my top 8.

Max Baer could have been top 5, but I don't think he lived up to his talent.

I said it then and I'll say it now....Holyfield would have beaten Tyson any time, any place. Holyfield was a superior boxer who could take a punch, unlike anyone, really, Tyson ever faced when he made his rep. We really don't know how good Tyson was or could have been. His career was primarily made on has-beens and never-weres.

I think Riddick Bowe was the most talented fighter of that era, he just didn't have the desire. Same could be said for Lennox Lewis. I think both fighters had more talent than either Holyfield or Tyson, but I would probably rank these guys in their prime 1) Holyfield 2) Tyson 3) Lewis 4) bowe

    skank;

    Harry Greb was a MIDDLEWEIGHT.
He spent his career between middleweight and light heavyweight.
He never had a significant heavyweight win, was never heavyweight champ and didn't campaign in the heavyweight division to begin with.

If we're talking about a top five list of middleweights, he belongs.
    Top five P4P?
He probably belongs in that one too.
    Heavyweights?
The boxer should have actually been a heavyweight, Greb was not.

    My top five heavyweights:
    Louis
    Ali
    Marciano
    Foreman
    Jack Johnson

    1. Joe Louis
...I give Louis the nod based on longevity. When he retired the first time in 1948 he was 57-1 with 25 title defenses over a 12-year span. Then he came out of retirement in 1950 at age 36 and lost the title to Ezzard Charles and ended his career by losing to Marciano when Louis was a washed up 37 and Marciano was 28. Most boxing historians say he was clearly in decline when he retired in 1948. While Marciano was undefeated he retired at 32. He was great for about a five-year stretch from 1950-1955 and may very well have continued to win but as history has proven it's tough for anyone to stay on top for 12 years.
    2. Muhammad Ali
...He was the best in the best era of heavyweight boxing.
    3. Rocky Marciano
    4. George Foreman
    5. Joe Frazier
    6. Jack Johnson
    7. Sam Langford
    8. Larry Holmes
    9. Lennox Lewis

its hard to rank tyson. he would either win his fights easily or fold up like a cheap suit when the going got tough.thats never a sign of a great champion.
  • enigmaax
"Oh there they go. There they go, every time I start talkin 'bout boxing, a white man got to pull Rocky Marciano out their ass. That's their one, that's their one. Rocky Marciano. Rocky Marciano. Let me tell you something once and for all. Rocky Marciano was good, but compared to Joe Louis, Rocky Marciano ain't shit."
  • kritzell
Marciano at 5"10 190ish... How do you guys think he'd fare against bigger fighters like 6,6 250 Klitschko. Would he be able to get inside a taller fighter with a good jab? Thoughts.

The Coming to America line was the first thing I thought of when I saw the OP. Speaking of Hollywood, Max Baer was Jethro's father (The Beverly Hillbillies).

Mike Tyson would have knocked any of these guys the night he won the Heavyweight Title.
