the fuck is he doing?
he was finnin to make 22 mil this year, no one is gonna pay him that kinda scrilla
i guess he is gonna take a stab at free agency -
bo shemmy3337I am betting he just wants 4 more years with the Celtics. He is not going anywhere IMO.
-
2quik4uthere is no way they throw the max at him
-
daveThere are a ton of teams with cap space this year, next year there won't be. He will use that as leverage to resign with Boston. 4yrs/70mil is better than taking 22mil this year then signing for 3yrs/40mil or so he might get after this season.
-
hoops23This was talked about a while ago, but it's a rumor that Paul Pierce opted out to sign a cheaper deal to help the Celtics cap issues.
Honestly, the Celtics have been very loyal to Pierce, so this could be true. -
osu45804Celtics can offer Paul a 4 year 96 Million dollar deal under the current CBA and still resign Ray Allen and either Tony Allen or Nate Robinson... The rumors to fill the other roster spots consist of Ryan Gomes, Mike Miller, Brad Miller and/or Shaq .... ( Miller or Shaq due to Perkins having surgery tomorrow and is out until late December/Early January)

Pierce's #34 Will be in the rafters in the The Garden.... The Captain isn't going anywhere -
davenot trying to start an argument or anything, but would that really help their cap situation? won't they be over no matter what even if he takes a cut? I know they can resign their own free agents but can they go after other guys?
-
hoops23Yes^, but it gives them more flexibility to re-sign the guys already on their team. (I.E, Ray Allen)

celts can but they wont that would be stupid to give him a max deal -
osu45804It can be spread out to where all 96 will not be on the books for just the next 4 years.... Pierce IS the Celtics franchise, Keeping Paul, and resigning Ray w/ KG & Rondo is the smart thing to do and the RIGHT thing to do... Paul won't leave b/c if he does that just leaves KG, Rondo, and the next 3 starters are ??? Ainge won't let that happen... It's looking like Doc very well could be coming back next year as well.

I thought they could sign ray for at least as much as he made last year no matter what even if it's over the cap? -
2quik4uas long as he has bird rights they can
-

That's not even the point, the point is LOWERING their cap.
I'll just throw out some random numbers.
Let's say the Celtics stand at around 70 million in terms of payroll.
If Pierce came back and signed a deal worth 15-17 mill a year, that raises their payroll to 85-87...
If he stays at 22 mill, it's take it to 92 million. That 85-87 million is easier on the pockets.
Again, these #'s aren't accurate, I'm just using them for example. -
jpake1My sources tell me he's going to retire to become an assistant as Kansas. His wife is close to getting a job as a Business professor there and she's giving him the heat. Don't fuckin' question me-- I have SOURCES.
-
davethat is a tiny amount of cash in boston, hence the reason i don't think he is helping out the C's. he's doing this for himself.

No, because by lowering the cap number it makes it easier to keep the team in tact plus add a player with the MLE. -
jpake1Whatever he takes less of this year will be multiplied by two. With him, they'll be over the tax, that's without looking but I think so. So it's double. If he takes 4M less, it's actually 8M less for Boston. It matters to the owner more than anybody else.
-
daveI don't think being over the cap by 10 or 17 makes a difference in the MLE. relative numbers i know, but they will be over no matter what.
-
OHStateOfMindInteresting decision.

Yes, thank you.. I'm trying to explain it but I was having a hard time... I'm tired.
And it also makes a difference because of the luxury tax. Every million you shed is another chunk you save when paying out the luxury tax. -

correct, but i don't think that helps the team, and 8mil to the owner honestly isn't that much. that's all I'm saying. he's not doing this to help the team because it can't help make the team better. -
jpake1The only people willing to go into luxary tax mode are true champions, crazy owners that think they have what it takes, and Cuban.
-
jpake1Okay, become an owner and tell me 8M isn't much. It doesn't help the team in terms of making roster moves, but it makes the owner happy.
-
dave8mil is not that much, it's less than 1 bad 1 yr contract. pierce isn't making this move to help ownership save 8mil when their net worth is tens of times more than his, that's all. since it doesn't help the team sign players it's obviously a move that he thinks will put more cash in his pockets.
what makes the owner happy is going deep into the playoffs every year and winning a title, not taking a pay cut. -

Dude, this was discussed a little while back that Pierce could opt out and take a smaller deal in order to help the finances of the team.
Whether or not you think Boston has the deep pockets doesn't mean the owner wants to be ass raped in luxury tax AND not be able to keep his core group.
I'm guessing they would like to hang onto Ray Allen and they have other needs as well. They have to get front court help, point blank.
