Kinda like when people from Ohio act like their from Pittsburgh? -
SportsAndLadyThe ESPN people are not retarded..they wouldn't have the world cup all over their website, you know, the most followed sports website in the country, if the people weren't watching/interested. When this World Cup is over, you will be proven wrong by the TV ratings. That is all.

The US had a good buildup to this World Cup. And because of that there were more viewers initially to watch their games and some of the others because those were potential opponents. When they lost the air went out.
I think it's bad journalism to keep acting like all of these games from here on out are gripping the nation. The mainstream tuned in Saturday because it was a special event to see the US on the big stage but that was the climax and now it's downhill. -

Yeah well go ahead and keep thinking that. I mean we've already told you that you are completely wrong, but since you're being persistent with this obviously you are not gonna change your wrong viewpoint on the world cup. So what's the point?
Obviously there will be less excitement for the World Cup w/ the US out, but you are acting like it is now on the equivalent to figure skating. It's still the most popular event in America right now, even w/out the US playing. -
hoops23BTW, HELL OF GAME by Germany.

NonYou guys are phonies and you're just mad because somebody has the guts to call you out on it.
You're acting like you're living in Europe, watching soccer with an announcer with a british accent.
Soccer is not popular in the United States. It's a niche sport in high school, college and the MLS is a second rate professional league that garners nothing but back page news, if that. -

Oh really? high school soccer, collegiate soccer, and the MLS aren't the most popular sports in the country? WOW, where'd you hear that?!!
We're talking about the World Cup, dumbass. It's the most popular sporting event in the country right now...you still have yet to prove that wrong, BECAUSE YOU CANT.
And you're not really calling us out on anything, you're trying to tell us that the MLS isn't as popular as the NFL. Groundbreaking news there, chap. -

Over 17.5 million youths played soccer this past year.
College teams have seen attendance rises each year.
The MLS has 16 teams and averages 16,500 fans per game.
Nobody is acting like they live in Europe, especially just because we enjoy/love the sport of soccer.
You're the biggest phony of anybody. You live in OHIO and cheer for teams in ANOTHER state.
SMFH. -

The World Cup is the most popular among other countries and maybe in the US when the US is playing but now that they're out it's not as popular in the US as MLB, even at this time of year. The Yankees/Dodgers series would be better to do a story on then Argentina/Mexico or a breakdown of the NBA free agency coming up. If the content is lacking this much they should be creative with all of their talented writers. -
hoops23You're stupid as hell.
I'm pretty sure we have enough sports writers to cover all the events going on. -

I grew up closer to Pittsburgh than any other major city and almost my entire family is from Western Pa and took me to Pittsburgh games growing up.
All you guys that follow the English Premier League and other soccer events throughout the year are phonies, trying to be some alternative young person.
You're not fooling me for a second. -

Alternative young person? I'm 23 lol.
Following the EPL? It's a different league. I follow the MLS as well, ironically the Columbus Crew. I don't have a favorite foreign club soccer team, I usually follow players. I'm looking for a premiere club team to root for, whether it be in the EPL or La Liga, but I haven't found the one that sticks to me.
And it doesn't matter how close you were born to Pittsburgh, borders outweigh miles and if you were born and raised in Ohio you're a bandwagon piece of shit. -

Family outweighs borders or miles. I root for the same teams they did. lol
23? I'm not surprised. You're going through a phase trying to impress the ladies, perhaps, with a love of the arts, foreign culture and soccer.
Let's just call it what it is. -

wrong again. I've been with the same girl for 5 years, we're engaged and have a 10 week old daughter. I'm not trying to impress anybody.
Also, just because you're family was bandwagoning fair weather fans, doesn't mean you have to follow in their uneducated ways. -

Let me say it again, they were from Pennsylvania. Grandfather worked at the steel mill and then all of the kids liked the same teams. No bandwagon because the Steelers were bad when the fan lineage began.
I was kind of joking just now, though, and don't want to get too personal about anything. Good to hear about having a 10-week old daughter.
I guess my point before getting off track is that with the USA losing Saturday it was pretty crushing to the World Cup momentum, in the United States. I know it's the most popular sport around the world but not here. They may luck out that this is one of the most dull sporting times imaginable. -
hoops23Ok, well I was just firing back at you for making those points to begin with, I don't care who you root for honestly.
Nobody is saying Soccer is one of the top 3 sports here in America, but it doesn't have to be. United States is HUGE and has the ability to support all these sports, which it's doing. Soccer is definitely growing.
Just turn over to ESPN 2 right now, there is a Live game between Seattle and Philly of the MLS, with a GREAT crowd on hand.
The World Cup will still draw good ratings, obviously not as great as if USA was still in it, but good nonetheless.
And thanks for the kind words about my daughter, she's pretty amazing haha.. -

Too busy watching some thrilling Pirates/A's baseball. haha -
Laley23Im just baffled that you think NBA Free Agency is bigger than the World Cup, even with the USA out. Not that ESPN is solely a US business anyway (they do have the channel in several countries, and the Website is viewed by a ton of other people outside the country....
Taking every game involved last World Cup ESPN had over 26 billion viewers. The USA was shit and went out in the group stages. They are going to easily surpass that number this time around. To think that people in USA would watch a show about NBA Free Agency or a random ass baseball game on Wednesday afternoon over the World Cup is the most loony toon thing Ive heard in a long while. -
sjmvsfscs08Give me a fucking break. Anyone who tries to say soccer is dumb and unpopular and then says he's watching baseball instead is an idiot. Baseball is just so pathetically boring. I watched all of the US' World Cup games and all of them were fantastic. The draw with England, the comeback against Slovenia, the amazing finish against Algeria, and even the shit that was put on display against Ghana. All of it was fantastic.
And I say this as a damn good football player back in my day and someone who coached high school football the last two years. Soccer and football/baseball/just shouldn't be compared, and I absolutely hate how fans of those sports constantly feel tho need to bash soccer. You are the fucking phonies. This notion that soccer isn't popular in the US is silly, and makes you look like a fool. We are a country of 310,000,000 millions people. If only a quarter of us pay attention to soccer, that's still the population of Germany, Italy, France, Spain, or the United Kingdom. -

Saying baseball is boring and then saying soccer is exciting is clearly just a matter of opinion. I don't think anyone can make that argument for one of those sports being significantly more exciting than the other. There are enough people who would say they're both boring.
I guess I don't understand that last part. You're saying soccer and football shouldn't be compared? What, high school football, college football and the NFL? -
Laley23Soccer can be boring, but if you truly understand EVERYTHING, not just basic rules etc, it is the most exciting game. You literally have to watch or you could miss something. That is one thing no other sport has, and that really cant be argued.... I guess Nascar to an extent.
Football, baseball, basketball etc all have breaks within the game as well as breaks outside the game (commercials).
I honestly do understand, 100% do understand why people do not enjoy the sport. What I dont get at all is why it is seemingly the ONLY sport that is bashed. Where people go out of their way to hate it. Where people complain about it all the time. That I dont really understand, and I never will. -
AutomatikNon is just trolling and looking for a response. Why give him one? Dude is lost.
You do realize that ESPN is worldwide don't you? -

I've covered soccer a lot in high school and began understanding the game because I had to.
But I still think so much of time amounts to nothing. People will say you have to understand it and know what all is going on and that you have to watch everything but that's bull crap. The key moments often are few and far between.
And what happens is the fans get restless for some action so they usually complain over every little call. That's a big part of soccer at every level. Just coaches, players and fans crying about the calls.
