Is Landon Donovan an American sports superstar?
-
gorocks99After today, do you think he's reached "superstar" status - as in, he could be in a commercial and the majority of people would recognize him? Obviously soccer isn't a top 3 sport in the country, but he's far and away the face of the national team.
-
I drain 3'sHe's already in a commercial on ESPN. As far as if the majority of people would recognize him, I have no idea. If I had to guess I'd say a good bit of people know who he is.
-
Trueblue23I don't think so.
IMO, to be a "superstar" you have to be recognizable by non-fans. You could walk up to most people in the US and they would know who LeBron is, who Kobe is, Peyton Manning, Tiger, etc. Unless you're a sports fan, most people probably don't know who Donovan is. -
WebFireI have no idea who that is? I'm guessing a soccer player?

Lame attempt, especially since you most likely read the opening post. -

You've giving everyone who has ever been associated with Michigan a bad name.
My piece of paper from them just dropped in value because of that post.

Mooney44CardsSoccer has not snuck into the American consciousness yet. So no. They will need a miracle run to catapult anyone to superstar status. You need him to be on the Today Show, The View, Regis and Kelly, the late night talk shows, stories on the nightly news. He's closer than any American soccer player has been, but he's not there yet.

sjmvsfscs08No. Not even close and I really like Landon Donovan. He's the biggest name in soccer, but that's like being the highest paid person at your local Wendy's...you're not exactly knocking on door at being a billionaire.

I would argue that Beckham is still the bigger name, at least here in the US... and that's sad. -

lol what is sad about that? Beckham is one of the most popular and most recognized celebs/athletes in the world....and has been for quite some time. Donovan is not even in the same league as Becks.
As or the question by the OP....I don't think so. Hes definitely the face of the US game, but I don't think he's reached superstar status yet....or if he ever will. -

Well, its not that bad..lol Donovan is a Multi-Millionaire.
But sadly no. Of course by the football reference, he is. Most people dont know who the football players are.
Donovan was the best player for Everton a few matches when he was there. -
namod65I wouldn't recognize him if I saw him. I don't know what he looks like, or what position he plays. All I know about him is that he plays that third-world kickie ball sport for the USA.

Do you not watch Sportscenter?
Whether you like soccer or not, I find it hard to believe that any fan of sports in general does not know who he is. -

I honestly have never heard of him until this thread. I am a sports fan. I pay zero attention to any soccer. And I don't watch Sportscenter most of the time. -

No, you are a casual fan. Sports fans know the best players in every sport let alone the best American at the WORLD CUP! -

Really? Who led Div. I college men's lacrosse in goals scored last year? Pfffft, casual fan you are. -
ytownfootballHate to say I am in accord with a UM fan, but I'm in the same boat as Web. Though I've heard the name before and know he's a soccer player, how good he is, and who he plays for is a total mystery. I couldn't pick the dude out of a police line-up.
And just a little FYI...I don't give a shit.
