Reds News: Wood and Maloney to bullpen??

    Anyone but our current bullpen.
  • justincredible
They definitely need to do something. Outside of Rhodes I have zero confidence in any reliever coming into the game.

I'd much rather see a trade, but if they have to, this might need to be given a try. How much longer are they going to allow Massett to suck?

Also, how does the rotation shake out when Volquez is back??

I'm looking for Harang to be traded.

If the Reds are still in the race, Harang won't be dealt. He's been the 2nd best SP in the last month.

I like this idea unless they can find someone willing to trade a solid bullpen pitcher for Maloney. I doubt that will happen. Even I can see that this guy is not a big league starter. Every time I see him pitch, I see a two to four inning pitcher that is being over-stretched into a starter. Wood at least deserves a shot to start his big league career as a reliever over the soft toss machines that are in the bullpen now.
I like the idea of keeping Chapman as a starter. He has already experienced enough change over the past year. No need to make it worse. Plus, we may need him down the stretch as Leake crests the rookie-killing 150-inning mark.
I could see Homer and/or Volquez coming back in the bullpen, too. With Homer's recent setback, I'm beginning to wonder if Volquez beats him back. All reports say he is looking very, very good.

They didn't do either. They called up Jordan Smith from AA.

He has a 5.08 ERA in AA with only 14 K's in 28 innings. Opponents are hitting .319 against him. I hope I'm wrong but I have no idea how this guy could help the pen if they actually plan on ever pitching him.

    WTF.

Yeah I'd agree, I don't see Maloney as big league starter either

There has to be another reason to call up Smith and send down Del Rosario (1-1, 2.08 in nine appearances) that we are not seeing. I just don't understand this move.
  • Azubuike24
They sent down Del Rosario, who was actually being used...so they are either going to use him or will be making another move within a day or less. I agree, it makes no sense unless he has some sort of trick pitch or gimmick that they believe can be effective in the very short-term. Who knows.

Del Rosario has been pretty good, but his ERA is a little misleading. He hasn't been good at stranding inherited runners. I know that really isn't his fault he gets put in that situation, but still.

Was just going to say the same thing, it seemed that inherited runners scored more often than not when Rosario was in the game.

Shit, after tonight, I wouldn't mind seeing him thrown off the Purple People Eater bridge.

Watched them interview Smith....he is shocked he was called up.

There is only one player in the Reds minor league that would have an extended success....some may look good the first time through and maybe long enough to last.....but Chapman is the only guy who might do great things in the bullpen.

That's not going to happen... Jocketty already has been quoted as saying they aren't putting him in the pen.

    I rest my case.

It is a testament to how bad the pitching has been over that time. Nobody has really gotten it done.

Leake and Arroyo are reliable....Cueto is more reliable than Harang...Harang is an eency bit more reliable than Bailey

I doubt they trade Bailey because of his age and the fact he was a 1st rounder. Harang will probably be the odd man out

Smith is on the 40 man, has been pitching real well lately, and doesn't walk people like the rest of the pen.

Putting Wood in the bullpen and keeping Harang in the rotation would be a classic Reds move.
  • BCBulldog
Let's give Harang another chance before we relegate him to the bullpen or move him in a trade. Wood has proven nothing at this level and Chapman is not at all ready. When Volquez is back, we have something to talk about. Until then, let's see how it shakes out. They have a tough stretch coming up with six games on the left coast, then they come back to the Indians and Phillies. While the Indians aren't all that good, the series is always a big one. I'm not sure that is when you want to start messing with the rotation.

    All that matters is winning.

    1) The NL Central is winnable.

    2) The Cardinals have as many issues as the Reds

I could care less who pitches, comes up, goes down, starts, pitches in relief or gets paid what. Decisions should be made based on this not based on money. If a guy is the most ready, use him in whatever role helps the team. Worrying about whether someone is on the 40-man or whether a guy should start or come out of the pen isn't worth not going all out to try to make the playoffs.

The way MLB is and this team is built, there is no guarantee a Dusty Baker team will even be in contention again. So go for it now.
