Make A Statement Reds!
-
Ironman92....do it now and don't wait for trading season.......go get Roy Oswalt. He's opened himself for a contender and right now the Reds are in the pitiful central. Oswalt has pitched well but is just 2-5 for his putrid offense.
I jokingly made a thread about the Reds obtaining Oswalt in a believable 3 team trade 3 years ago on the huddle and really ticked some people off.
Get to it Jocketty! Make a statement....don't act like the usual Reds...get em talking and be the agressor. -
Ironman92In 8 starts this season his worst outing was 6 innings and 3 runs...he's on pace for 248 innings and 234 strikeouts and with a 2.63 era
Oswalt in in danger of a 1987 Nolan Ryan season where he was 8-16 but led the league with 275 striekouts and had and era around 2.70 -
jordo212000I am completely against that if it means giving up one of the better minor leaguers. If you can get him for some mid-tier prospects and Arroyo/Harang... you do it. Otherwise you don't. The Reds have 6 young guys with nice potential, thus I don't think you really have to make a deal like this. It took the Reds years to rebuild their minor league system, I'd hate to see them get back into that cycle of trading away young guys.
Mike Leake
Homer Bailey
Johnny Cueto
Aroldis Chapman
Edinson Volquez
Travis Wood. -
Ironman92There are many ways to make things work.
The Cardinals are going to go out and get someone huge.
The Reds aren't the desperate team right now....desperate teams always have to give up more.
How many bold moves have the Reds made for a playoff chance in the last 15 years???
I don't want to give away 4 of those 6 you mentioned...but there are 2 I would for sure and no one knows what those players are going to do down the road....you know exactly what Roy Oswalt is going to give you.....a team that has no choice but to contend for the playoffs.
Yes, right now the Reds pitching is very good......you can never have too much pitching.
Do something while they are hot...don't wait for desperation during a June swoon. -

How? The Cardinals have nothing to trade that isn't already at the major league level. The Cardinals are in need of prospects if anything.Ironman92 wrote: There are many ways to make things work.

I don't think Oswalt is what they need. If a legitimate leadoff hitter becomes available, you trade for him. If not.....there isn't much else the Reds are in dire need of. Maybe a guy with some power to take over the 4 spot? But right now, everyone is contributing on offense, the defense is I'm pretty sure the best in baseball in fielding percentage, and 15 out of the last 18 starts by our rotation have been quality starts. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. -
Ironman92This is as good as this group can play....it won't get better IMO.
The Cards will make a big move....they'll find a way. -
Azubuike24The Reds actually have a perfect farm system to make moves. They have a lot of talent, but none of it is can't miss talent outside of maybe Chapman at this point. They have a lot of guys who are promising, but could go either way when it comes to actually being starter material in the major leagues. Those are the guys to deal, especially if there are a few who another franchise might value very high, like Todd Frazier or Chris Heisey.
-
Ironman92I also think the buzz would help fill the stadium......GABP could be a constant buzz.
The 1st place Reds add nemesis Roy Oswalt......man we might only have 5-7 threads about LeBron if that happened! -
Azubuike24I don't see Houston dealing Oswalt, especially this early, and in the division. They have about 4-5 big trade pieces, Oswalt, Lee, Berkman, Pence and maybe Myers. Once the chain starts, it's house cleaning time for them, because they have nothing to really go with afterward.
So they may be looking for a package for Roy O, and it might mean the Reds would have to really give up a lot. Alonso, Heisey/Frazier and Wood for Oswalt? -
darbypitcher22^^^^
I can't see them trading him within the divsion either, unless Houston is just wayyyy out of it here in a couple of months(they didn't help themselves in San Francisco this weekend) -
Mooney44CardsOswalt has already said that he is open to being traded if they feel like they have other holes to fill:
http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/05/roy-oswalt-open-to-trade.html
I just don't see us needing a starting pitcher unless someone blows up. I guess I could see Homer or Harang being shifted to the bullpen if things get bad and then maybe this trade makes sense, but only then. -
georgemc80He would most likely veto a trade to the Reds. Roy is looking for a more traditional contender. The intradivisional trade however is not an issue to Houston. They might also be shopping Lance Berkman. Hunter Pence and Michael Bourne are the only players safe right now.
-
Azubuike24I think Pence's name has also come up in trade rumors.

I agree. St. Louis has nothing in the system and they wouldn't be willing to take on a lot of salary. They an astronomical amount tied up in Pujols and Holliday and it is only going to get worse with Pujols, he is due for a new contract soon.Mooney44Cards wrote:

If the Reds make a move, I think they will trade for a LF. Stubbs isn't going anywhere, especially if he keeps hitting. Gomes is probably best served being a spot starter who spells the LF and RF a few times per week.
However, I like the lineup the way it is currently constructed. There is no need to blow the team up right now. The Reds actually are in a position of strength, they have some nice bargaining chips, but those chips could actually be used on this club. IF Alonso hits down at Louisville and as long as he plays a serviceable LF that would be like a trade for the Reds.
I can see Heisey being dealt but I don't know what for. If they were to deal for a starter, they are going to have to get rid of some one or put them in the bullpen.
Harang
Arroyo
Cueto
Leake
Bailey
Volquez- due back in about a month or two...
Chapman- probably will be making his debut in the next month or so
+ potential starter? Where would he pitch? haha -
Mooney44CardsLast I saw, Volquez isn't due back until at least August.
-
Azubuike24Volquez did say it could be June, but after a serious surgery like that, I don't see the Reds rushing him back, especially since they are going to count on him in 2011 and beyond, and don't necessarily need him this year. Volquez has said he's going to get back before anyone expected, but the Reds aren't going to rush him, so I'd be surprised if he even pitches with Cincy this year. I could see him getting some innings in A or AA, and then maybe a bullpen arm in August, or September when the rosters get expanded. That's about the extent of it.
-
jordo212000
Well that still leaves 6 capable starting pitchers, 7 if you count Travis Wood. I don't see them making any crazy moves for a starter, but that's just meMooney44Cards wrote: Last I saw, Volquez isn't due back until at least August. -
thavoiceI wouldnt count on Volquez for much this season. Yeah he said maybe june but athlets say alot of stupid shit and the organization wont let one of their best arms get rushed back..
-
BCBulldogI'd rather see the Reds try to get Berkman if they can find a way to take on his contract. He fixes the top of the order problem and would be a solid upgrade in left (if he can still play OF). To me, starting pitching is the least of our concerns right now. Maybe offer Alonso and one of the AAA pitchers.
-
Midstate01I personally would like to see them not make a move. Compete this year and get your young players a lot of experience. I don't want to see them go trading away our solid young talent.
-
thavoiceI like how this team is being built. Draft and devlope and then find guys to fill in holes. The Volquez trade was amazing. When the REds got him we were like "who" and he didnt have good numbers with the stRangers.
We all knew about Rolen and they needed a bat for SS and got Cabrera. No longer is this the Rehab Reds like they used to be in trying to get an old dude or a guy off injury and catch lightening in a bottle.
Sure...we ALL wanna win this year but i dont want to trade the future for a partial year player ya know. I like the young vibe of this team and there will be growing pains but they will learn from it all and make em better going forward.
I can see minor moves here and there for a utility type guy maybe but nothing that is gonna make the Reds trade away a great prospect that could be the next 5-10 yr starter for the REdlegs -
Midstate01I 100% agree. I'd love to go to the playoffs this year. But I'd like to see if the guys we have now can do it. Not watch them trade away great young talent that we could use for a long string of winning seasons.
I'd be just fine with missing the playoffs and not giving up young players. -

Mooney44CardsI think its way too early to know if we'll need to make a big trade come the deadline.
Maybe somebody melts down by July and we need to fill that hole, or maybe somebody gets injured. But I don't want to make a big trade just because thats what the Yankees and Red Sox and Cardinals do, I'd like to make a trade for a guy who would fill a hole AND put us over the top. Right now our only "hole" is in centerfield and to be honest, Stubbs plays a really good centerfield and is really good on the bases. Certainly an upgrade from Willy Tavares. But if you can get a legitimate leadoff hitter who plays CF without giving up too much, make the trade. But its too early to know whether thats going to be the case or not.
Who knows, with how Heisey has impressed so far, maybe given the opportunity he could be what we've been looking for. The next 2 months should be interesting. We'll find out A LOT about the 2010 Cincinnati Reds. -
NateThis is the most exciting Reds team in many years. I was always hopeful in 02 and beyond but then they started selling the farm it seemed like. I never knew if it would actually pay off but its starting to look that way.
