Boxing or MMA?

    I rest my case
You have absolutely no knowledge of either sport...In MMA the guy on bottom can last that long because of submissions and grappling, the guy on top can not simply just throw wild strikes without a huge risk for submission.
I would like to see you take an uppercut from Buster Douglas and be able to stand after... and if you think both sports are rigged why don't you start doing one of the sports and you might have a chance becuase it obviously takes no skill to do either one because all the fights are rigged...Fucking Troll

1.I fell really bad for you if you believe that MMA is atleast somewhat rigged,fake..etc. It isn't 100% real. Also..if it wasn't somewhat rigged, these guys who are 40 and 41 years old wouldn't be able to still hold their own againist 25 and 26 year olds. Sorry...but it's the truth

2.Tyson was on his way to being the greatest fighter of all time, and he gets knocked out by a fat, lazy, middle of the road fighter..and you DONT think that screams rigged??

MMA by far, finally wrestlers can use their skills and make money!! A point of the earliest UFC's though awesome were really shams. They were created by the Gracies featuring fighters with way over inflated resumes to showcase BJJ to the world. MMA has evolved and you better master more than a few aspects to win. MMA is now mainstream and it's not going away. I firmly would put MMA well over boxing and I too think boxing is slowly dying!

There are some match ups that can help this debate coming up:
May 15th at Shine Fights Ricardo Mayorga makes his MMA debut against longtime MMA/UFC vet Din Thomas.
In August longtime boxing great James Toney makes his MMA debut vs UFC/MMA legend Randy Couture.

Every sport in the world must be rigged then. Because even champions have a bad game and lose some they aren't supposed to.

I see the Florida Gators lost to Ole Miss in '98 when they won the NC. Must be rigged.

    Lol @ "MMA is rigged".

boxing. one thing that hurts boxing that are that most big fights are pay per view. back in the 80' when boxing was thriving the champs fought alot and on network tv. seemed like every weekend there was title fight on tv.

So when a boxer either collapses into a coma or just collapses and dies after a fight do you think that was fixed too genius?
They took a bribe to step in the ring and get beat to death?

    Boxing includes...boxing

MMA includes...boxing, muay thai, karate, judo, jiu jitsu, greco-roman wrestling, free style wrestling, sambo...etc

I'll take MMA as a fighter has to be at least "adequate" in many more disciplines than just one.

    KnighRyder;

Being on pay per view doesn't hurt MMA.
One of the things that hurt boxing is the fact that people who do follow it can't quit complaining about days bygone.
Those same network tv broadcasts in the 80's also featured a boxer getting beat to death in a very, very one-sided fight and another one who got caught bludgeoning his opponent with loaded gloves.
Be careful what you wish for.

Considering the fact that the heavyweight division has been down(specifically, AMERICAN heavyweights) for 7-8 years boxing is doing just fine.
I'm sure everybody who reads this has heard the phrase "As the heavyweight division goes, so goes boxing".
Boxing has a over 100 years of history to give that phrase credibility.
The American heavyweight scene sucks right now and the popularity of the sport is not what it was the last time the heavyweights were good(90's).
That is the big difference between now and a decade(or three)ago.
Look what has been going on, ALL of the big fights in America feature little guys, not just some....ALL of them and it's been that way for a while now.
If you take what is currently happening in the sport and stack a solid group of American heavyweights on top of it the sport is suddenly do great.
There is no reason to think a revived heavyweight division wouldn't lift the sport.

But if that were to happen then the plodding heavyweights would suck up most of the tv dates and we probably wouldn't get to see fights like Marquez/Diaz or Martinez/ Williams.
I would be happy if all the top heavyweights stay in Europe for a while longer.

who is complaining hulkamania? i was merely stating the facts. guys like tommy hearns, ray leanard, marvin hagler, roberto duran to name a few carried boxing. none were heavy weights ,there were many more great fighters from that era. tell network , abc, cbs or nbc featured a fighter getting bludgeoned with a loaded glove?
  • Hulk Smash
Luis Resto vs Billi Collins, not sure what network. Whichever network Duran used to fight on.
Resto was caught when Collins trainer(and dad) noticed something different about the gloves Resto was wearing right after the fight ended.
Padding had been removed from Resto's gloves and he had plaster under his wraps.

Larry Holmes was ruling the heavyweights during that tme. An American heavyweight champion and household name bigger than everyone save Leonard who literally had years go by between fights. For a while Holmes carried the sport as much if not more than the rest combined, his fights were a big deal until he finally lost one. Leonard fights were huge too but after 1981 he fought all of 4 times in the next 7 years.
I don't know that the heavyweight divison of the 80's(before Tyson) was much better than it is now but the champ was American and that made a big difference.
  • KnightRyder
that fight was on espn i remember that fight vividly . espn at that time wasnt network tv. it was strictly cable. duran fought on cbs many times. holmes was ruling the heavyweight which basically shows you the heavyweight division was weak. yea his fight against ernie shavers , renaldo snipes , james quick tillis yea those were a big deal. bigger than leonard vs hearns, duran vs hearns, hearns vs hagler, hagler vs leonard, aaron pryor vs alexis arguello. yea those fight were small potatoes

Boxing, for sure. My friends and I (early to mid-30's) still get together at someone's house and watch just about every pay-per-view, not to mention the HBO cards and, occasionally, the Showtime cards.

MMA just doesn't do it for me . . . . even a terrible boxing match still has a rhythm to it that just makes it more aesthetically pleasing.

You just pretty much described me and my friends as well. LOL
