Cavs fans, should Hickson play more?

  • 77Legend
Should Hickson play more and Shaq play less, at least against running teams?
  • SportsAndLady
It should be how it was today.

Then when we play Orlando, JJ should rarely see the floor.
  • Mooney44Cards
I think Shaq plays a fair amount....gotta keep him fresh, we'll need his size vs. Orlando. Today they played the same amount of minutes. JJ should however, be getting minutes from Varajao.
  • Mr. 300
JJ needs to see the floor a little more. He was such a great part of the rotation during the year.
  • sleeper
I think he should. Shaq only needs to play when the team has a dominating center, like the Magic and the Lakers.
  • slingshot4ever
It all depends on the matchups with the other teams.

I've been wanting a discussion on Hickson to come up, because at the trade deadline all the Cavs fans were so against trading Hickson, yet I kept saying why do people value him so much when he's hardly going to play come playoff time. Just think, the Cavs could have Stoudemire right now, and no one can convince me that the wouldn't be a better team with him. Hickson is not even a factor come playoff time.

Hickson is like 21 years old..he will be ridiculously good in 2 years.

JJ should play more against teams like Chicago or Atlanta. Those teams do not have a true center that will play with his back to the basket.

But Cleveland went on their big run in the 3rd with Shaq on the floor.

thedynasty, Cleveland has a PF right now that we gave up for the #31 pick that is averaging 18 points and 8 rebounds while shooting 49% from the field.

We didn't have to give up a very young and solid PF to get veteran production at the PF spot.
  • RedBlackAttack
JJ just doesn't match up well with Chicago. In four regular season games (with significantly more minutes), he averaged 4.5 points on 8-21 (38%) shooting and just 2.7 rebounds. The only reason he got extended minutes tonight was because of foul difficulties.

He'll be more valuable against the Celtics in the next round.

    What does "ridiculously" mean?

Is he better than Amare Stoudamire?

I just don't get the fascination with Hickson. I think he's a good young player, but he's not good enough to get Cleveland over the hump.

He isn't good enough now, but Cleveland doesn't need him to be good enough right now.

JJ will be a starter in 2 years for Cleveland, end of story. He'll be one of the better PF's, his athleticism is great and his jumper is slowly coming along. The plan was to sit him in the playoffs, the coaches have a good plan and timeline for JJ.

Jamison may not be as good as Amar'e, but Cleveland doesn't need him to be.

I'll take the 18 and 8 with 49% FG any day of the week. That will put a title in Cleveland.
  • thedynasty1998
Doesn't Cleveland want to win now? I don't see how you turn down a chance to make your team better when all you have to give up is a bench player. Hickson will never be an elite player, and that's exactly what Stoudamire is.

And isn't 20 and 10 better than 18-8? Who knows what Stoudamire would have averaged in Cleveland, but I think it's safe to say it makes them much better. Plus, Cleveland needs to beat Orlando and if you have to think Stoudamire is a better matchup against Howard than anyone on the current roster.

And on a different discussion, it's mind boggling that Cleveland didn't draft Dejuan Blair, and if they did have him, Hickson becomes much more expendable and then you do have Stoudamire while also having a young PF.

What are you basing this on?? I think that statement is one of the more ridiculous things i have ever heard.
    thedynasty1998 wrote: And isn't 20 and 10 better than 18-8?
Yeah, if they were giving up the same things.

If they had to give up the 31st pick for Amare then yea its better. But if you have to give up one of your better young guys who has potential out the roof, no its not better.
  • devil1197
thedynasty, the Suns pulled their offer. I am not sure why we are arguing if Amar'e would have been better.

The Suns wanted more, balked and turned down the Cleveland offer. The Cavaliers didn't want to end up empty handed like last year so they got a 18 and 8 guy for the #31 pick.

Its not like Cleveland turned down the Amar'e deal for Jamison if that is what you are implying.
  • thedynasty1998
The Cavs didn't want Hickson to be part of the deal.

And no, Hickson is not going to be elite. What would make you think otherwise? He's very limited offensively and has what, 2 years left on his contract. At that point what happens?

    Yeah hes 21

The more minutes JJ gets over Shaq. the better the chance the Cavs will win it all. Doesn't matter who the competition is.

Shaq is over the hill now, and hurts the team at both ends of the court. Hats off to him for having a great career...but just like Big Z, he should have his minutes cut way back.

He is limited because this is his first full year of NBA play.

Last year he was hurt and didn't play much. He was injured during the this past summer also.

Not sure how you think a player with basically a full year under their belt in the NBA has reached his ceiling offensively?

The Cleveland organzation loves JJ, hence the plan for him to be the starter in two years. That is what happens at that point.

Depends what you mean by "elite"?

The guy has a world of talent. He will work on his jump shot hard over the summer. No reason to think he can't be a great player in this league. The guy can run, is quick as anyone, can leap tall buildings and can block shots.

I was another guy who didn't get it when Cavs fans were doggedly against trading Hickson. I know Cavs fans say they know Lebron is coming back... but wouldn't you want to load up for THIS year seeing how Lebron could have 1 more year left? What good is Hickson going to be in 2 yrs if Lebron leaves town?

Also, who cares about the 31st pick? They're the Cavs, the guy wouldn't play and he probably wouldn't be good either. Just because the previous regime traded 1st rounders for garbage doesn't mean you should stop the practice all together.
  • devil1197
No one cares about the 31st pick, who said it matters?

Hence why it was traded for a PF who is putting up big numbers for Cleveland.
  • Footwedge
They wanted to keep Hickson becase Lebron ain't goin nowhere. The Cavs want to win several titles and Lebron wants to be part of it. They got Jamison for nothing and Hickson will be a huge factor over the next several years with Z and Shaq retiring.
  • SQ_Crazies
Yes. And he would be if not for other circumstances. Our rotations are situational because we have the ability to match up with anything. Against the Bulls, Hickson would be playing--but they're trying to get Shaq some work and up to game speed before throwing him right into D. Howard. Because they should be able to beat the Bulls regardless, and they are. All that matters is that we win--I don't care if it's by 1 or 25, it doesn't matter if it's pretty. Getting Shaq minutes right now is going to help our chances of winning down the road and it apparently isn't hurting those chances right now. Hickson will see plenty of minutes this postseason, we're still in the 1st round people...
