NFL draft blows out NBA playoffs in ratings battle
Posted by Michael David Smith on April 23, 2010 3:29 PM ET
More than twice as many people watched the NFL draft than the NBA playoffs on Thursday night.
The combined overnight rating for the first round of the draft was a 6.42, with ESPN generating a 5.47 rating and NFL Network getting 0.95. TNT got a 2.1 rating for the Chicago Bulls' NBA playoff win over the Cleveland Cavaliers and a 3.0 rating for the Oklahoma City Thunder's win over the Los Angeles Lakers.
The numbers are the latest reminder that in American sports, nothing even comes close to the NFL. That's why the NFL's decision to schedule a regular-season game at the same time as the World Series is just good business sense.
It's also why Mark Cuban's complaints about the scheduling of the draft are silly: If the NBA doesn't want to go head-to-head with the NFL draft in prime time, it should move its games to the daytime.

SageI'm not surprised. America loves football.
It's also the first round of the play-offs, and it's not like they're enticing match-ups to casual basketball fans. -
SQ_CraziesLOL, what do ratings have to do with anything?
-
wes_mantooth^^^Everything.
It shows that people are definitely more interested in the NFL draft than some of these 1st round matchups. Sage hit it right on the head....the casual fan does not care about these games at all. -
gibby08What do ratings have to do with anything?
Did you really ask that? -
SQ_CraziesBut then someone says, I wonder what SQ has to say about that. And that's what I say, read my first post again. Ratings have nothing to do with it. This was always an opinion from the start, but that's why it's overhyped--they push the coverage because people watch it. But it's just retarded how excited people get about it. It's the most pointless thing to watch. I mean it's been on my TV, but I just flip to it during commercials and check who gets picked where. I know that plenty of people are watching it, that's exactly why I think ti's overhyped--it's really pretty stupid but people get so damn excited about it.

Heretic
You're a very opinionated dude. I don't always agree with you and/or the way you express your opinions here and there. This is one of those times. You really were too kind in the way you responded to OhioChatter's herpes sore. He deserves far worse than a meager Demotivational...SQ_Crazies wrote:mtrulz wrote: ^^NBA's worse, pal. Then again, what he does deserve would be to be featured in Encyclopedia Dramatica's Pain Series...and there's no way that would be allowed on this site...so maybe you did do the right thing.
