Pittsburgh Penguins Play Final Regular Season Game at Mellon Arena

  • rock_knutne
The Pens will host the Islanders tonight (7:30PM on FSN Pittsburgh) in what will be the final regular season game ever at the Igloo. Pre-game ceremonies are planned with about 50 past players, coaches and management to bid farewell to the leagues oldest building.

I have some great memories of that place, watched some of the greatest moments in Pens history and a few great concerts too.

The new arena will be great and overall better but I'm going to miss that old time hockey feel in the Civic Arena/Mellon Arena/Igloo.

Not a bad run for the Pens. Three Stanley Cups. The entire Mario Lemieux era. Other greats like Jagr, Stevens, Francis, Coffey, Pronovost, Badger Bob, Crosby, Malkin, etc.

And a lot of other events and concerts, including The Beatles when it first opened up.

I don't even watch the Penguins all that often, but when an arena that has been around for quite a while, it is always a sad day. It'd be nice to send the building off with a championship, but that rarely happens.

Penguins win 7-3 tonight. Crosby for the first time in his career scored his 49th and 50th goal.

I like the Penguins (only Pittsburgh team I do, because I grew up an hour from Pittsburgh, with no Cleveland alternative, and no Blue Jackets yet), but Mellon Arena is a fucking dump. I hated that place.
