I always find this conversation interesting. I guess if you actually live in a particular city or go to a lot of live games, this makes sense. Most people's immediate influences probably play a role in that also.NOL fan wrote:

Doesn't saying "go Cleveland!" and "fuck Cleveland!" at the same time seem a bit odd....?
Personally, I grew up on The Sporting News, watching national television, and family influences from all over the country. I caught myself up on history and pretty much learned to read by obsessing through over a decade's worth of TSN back copies that my uncle gave to me. As a kid, I only ever went to baseball games live and that was only for the couple years I lived in California. So, proximity wasn't really a relevant factor. I like certain players, coaches, styles of play, hell even uniforms and helmets played a role.
I have my "favorites" but I've also had plenty of secondary teams that at times I root for just as much because of who happens to be playing there at the moment.
NFL: Cowboys - since I started watching; enjoyed the Raiders, Rams, Cardinals, and Saints at different times
NBA: Spurs - since Terry Cummings went there from the Bucks; always followed Dennis Rodman and Larry Johnson, as well
MLB: White Sox - since Robin Ventura started; remained partial to the Angels and Dodgers -

It's funny, the majority of my friends growing were Devils fans, but I started pulling for the Rangers before the Devils were born. My first NHL game was Rangers-Devils at the Meadowlands, and I have been to several matchups between the teams at the Garden as well. Always a great atmosphere at those games.brutus161 wrote:

Well, I don't really follow baseball at all, but my dad only cared about baseball as I was growing up and always watched and listened to the Indians and made sure all the little league teams I played on were the Indians. He watched OSU football, but Sundays were never reserved for NFL, they were for shooting, so I picked up on liking the Steelers on my own. To this day the only baseball team I will pay attention to are the Indians so that I can talk to my dad about them and he gets free tickets that he gives me from time to time and it's a fun weekend trip. Honestly though, I couldn't even tell you who is on the Indians roster this year, how many games they have played or what their record is.NOL fan wrote:
