Things that piss you off at work

  • FatHobbit
It's review time at work. We are graded on a scale of 1-5, where 1 is needs to be fired, 3 is meets expectations and 5 is super star. I have to do a self review and raises are based on your average score. They have been stressing to us that everyone should not be disappointed if they get meets expectations, which actually makes perfect sense to me if my raise wasn't based on that. But because it affects my paycheck I feel the need to inflate my score as much as possible.

We also get to do an anonymous review of our management and grade them on a scale of 1-5. (There are 50+ people In my department and they only get to see their averages and comments) In a meeting last week they suggested that giving them a 3 doesn't really tell them anything. We can give them 2s if we think something needs improvement but if they get a bunch of 3s that's kind of meaningless so if we're happy we should bump that score up to a 4. That seems like a bull shit excuse to bump their scores so management gets better raises... I feel like giving them straight 3s...

At my current job, not much, if anything. At my last job...pretty much everything but my immediate team members.

At my current job, what bugs me is setting up a new business partnership with the blessing of the higher-ups only to find out that the business' credit card is declined. It has happened three times in about 16 months.

Yeah, I'm getting out of there. I start my new job on September 4th.

Never give yourself a 3. Always a 4 or a 5. They can lower it if they want but don't do it on your own.

If I recall correctly didn't you quit a job you hated to go somewhere you liked but didn't leave you time to supervise this place? Are you still at the second place or have you moved on?

I agree with that. I'm not giving them an excuse to pay me less. But they are going to try to make me feel guilty about it.

Thank you! Same job, but a new company, and a 62.5% salary bump. The guy actually sought me out.

    self-reviews are pointless.

you (presumably) work for a company and ideally, you add value to their bottom line.

it's on the company to decide if you're beneficial to have around or not.

a shitty employee will happily keep cashing checks regardless of how valuable they think they are.

Nice; you will be particularly excited about the Trump tax cut.

Sad but true. Self-reviews are a chance to blow your own horn, and you need to do that. Just make sure you can justify the rankings. Don't be overly critical of yourself, but don't give yourself a fluff review, either. I don't think it hurts to put a 3 a couple places you have legitimate developmental needs (i.e. you've not been a manager, or not very long....or maybe you've only led 1 or 2 projects).

Also, when giving feedback and constructive criticism, realize if your comments are passed verbatim (and they often are) then you're writing style and language can give you away!

I think the best companies have employees write their reviews, but the manager is responsible for what is submitted and there is a process to discuss and revise what you write vs. what is finalized. Your manager, or his/her manager, may not be aware of all that you've done and how you did it. It's an opportunity to ensure you get the credit you deserve.

But otherwise I agree with you if your manager just rubber stamps that and submits.

When the boss cries poor mouth on a daily basis, he's done this for the last 25 years I've worked for him. He has every toy known to man, 3 boats, 5 atv's, every tool known to man, vacations all the time, a race car, could go on an on. Don't get me wrong he pays me well but I just get sick of hearing "I'm just not making any money" every damn day. I don't care what kind of assets he has, good for him he earned it, I just don't want to keep hearing that he don't make any money. One day he told me I make more money than he does, I just laughed at him.

Sounds like one of my first bosses. A landscape company owner.

He used to get tons of work done on his house using company funds and resources. Then, when it came time for Christmas bonuses to be handed out, he told us all, "Well, guys, it's been a hard year ..."

You're being too generous. Give them straight 2's, per their own suggestion. That'll tell them something.

Oh man, especially if it's something that is going to be painful. Everyone starts pushing their personal agendas....get half a dozen VP's with no CFO or CEO to control the meeting and it's chaos.
