Most Overrated Band of All Time
-
Dr Winston O'BoogieYou can only pick one. Must justify it too.
Mine is Led Zeppelin. In my judgement, they have one really good album (IV). LZ II, Houses of the Holy and Physical Graffiti have some decent songs mixed in with a lot of simply terrible music. LZ I, LZ III, Presence, In Through the Out Door - these are simply terrible records, 90% flat out bad music. Be honest about it. The band was completely self-indulgent with its music - every 20 minute half-assed blues wanna be jam session was recorded and pressed. And then Song Remains the Same? I can't think of a band that sounded worse live in concert than these guys. They were completely studio-gimmick reliant. SRTS shows this in all its ugliness. The only thing worse than hearing it is watching that abortion of a movie. That was like a crappy high school kid's art class project.
I know I'll catch grief, but it's all in fun. -

Nirvana / Kurt Cobain.
There, I said it. Waiting for the Seattle flannel crowd to fire up their torches and pitchforks. -

Haha. I'm sure my opinion on this topic isn't popular. But if we all picked Nickelback, what fun would that be?Zunardo;1854010 wrote:Throwing some grief your way - hope you're a Golden Glove!

4cards...I always thought the Beatles were over rated, so I'll say them and U2
-
SonofanumpI'd think Zeppelin is in my favorite 5 of all time.
Overrated:
U2
Radiohead
Sex Pistols
Greatful Dead
Dave Mathews -
ernest_t_bassAny of the dumb ass hip-hop/rap shit that is put out in the last 5 years. Shit is straight garbage.

Laley23If a bunch of people love a certain band and you don't, that doesn't make them overrated.
If not a lot of people like a band (record sales, etc), yet they are rated by magazines and critics as very high up...that would be overrated.
Eagles, Nirvana and Beatles, etc. don't fit this criteria. -
Dr Winston O'Boogie
you're looking at it much deeper than I had intended. The spirit of the question was to name the otherwise popular band you don't like. Their general popularity being synonymous with highly rated for this exercise.Laley23;1854133 wrote:If a bunch of people love a certain band and you don't, that doesn't make them overrated.

gutI still say if Kurt Cobain wasn't the first grunge lead to kill himself, Nirvana would be forgettable. If Justin Bieber killed himself, it isn't going to make his music good just because his death makes a big impression on a bunch of teenage girls who haven't learned yet what good music is
Yeah, I had his albums - I liked all the popular grunge bands. But outside of a few ok songs, Nirvana straight-up sucked. AIC, Pearl Jam, STP, Soundgarden....geez, pretty much every grunge band was so much better. -
SonofanumpI'd put the "Grunge"/ "120 minutes"/"Alternative" 90's rock bands in this order:
1) Alice in Chains
2) Nirvana
3) NIN
4) Smashing Pumpkins
5) Soundgarden
6) Pearl Jam
7) STP
8) Rage against the machine
9) Our Lady Peace
10) Toadies -
gut1) Alice in Chains
2) Soundgarden
3) Pearl Jam
4) STP
5) Smashing Pumpkins (whom I do not care for)
6) NIN
7) Screaming Trees
8) Mudhoney
9) Melvins
10) Rage against the machine
Go put album against album....Nirvana sucked. If Kurt didn't kill himself they'd be the Nickleback of grunge. -
Laley23Nirvana dissolved so early, its tough to tell what could have been. Soundgarden didn't really have their breakthrough till Cornell was 30, 3 years after the age Cobain was found dead. Pearl Jam not until Vedder was 27...Who knows what they could've become. The had arguably the greatest muscician of a generation in Dave Grohl. Not sure it's fair to say Nirvana "sucked" just because they made it big at a younger stage of their bands life.

bigdaddy2003Bruce Springsteen
Kiss -
SpockLots of good ones here
I would agree on KISS....the members of KISS as musicians suck. Paul Stanley cant sing.
80's hair far outweighs the grunge bands as a whole, Slaughter, Warrant, Poisen, Extreme, Bon Jovi, Europe, Twisted Sister all suck -

Terry_TateDamn there are some fire takes in this thread.
Only thing I want to address is LZ I is way better than the other albums it was mentioned with. 5 of the 9 songs are really good, which is way more than the other albums mentioned can say IMO.
He's obviously not a band but my "Overrated" contribution would be Lil Wayne. I like a few of his songs but I think overall he's not close to Jay-Z, Eminem, Kanye, etc. Not sure where he ranks on any greatest rappers list but I would say it has to be too high. -

SpockU2 does suck.
Bob Dylan is by far the most overrated skill wise. Dude can't sing or play the guitar. Neil young also falls in that category.
