Maybe she's one of those "urban explorers"?
I remember a bunch of us kids playing baseball in our neighborhood street with a whiffle bat and a tennis ball after dark (under the streetlight) - naturally, someone with stone hands let it go by, and it rolled down the storm drain. Some of the older teens got a pry bar and flashlight, lifted the manhole, climbed down - and no ball. It had rolled into connecting tube to the next storm drain. Another teen pried the other manhole, and using sticks managed to poke the ball closer to one of them to grab.
None of the parents ever came out to see what we were up to. I was 8 years old, and kept saying "Oh no - we're gonna get in so much trouble!"
