Firestick, Roku, other?

  • Benny The Jet
Our DirectTV contract is up and we're looking to get rid of cable. Anyone have a firestick, roku, or something else to stream? Any suggestions? I've also seen some on Craigslist that are jailbroken...is that worth the extra money? Legal?

I use an AppleTV and am happy with it.

I have a Fire Stick and a Roku 3. Both work well but I prefer the Roku.

    I like my Roku.

I have Roku 3, Roku 4 and AppleTV, and prefer the interface of the Rokus.

And no, jailbroken devices are not legal lol.

What's the jailbroken one do? (sorry, kind of dumb about these things)

The jailbroke devices have an app called Kodi on them. They download addons on the Kodi app to stream all types of media. Everything from live tv, sports, music and the latest movies. You can just about find any tv show or movie that has ever aired and watch it for free with no commercials. There is a lawsuit in progress right now concerning someone jailbreaking these devices and then offering them for sale. You can buy your own device and jailbreak it yourself by watching youtube tutorials. This has been going on for quite awhile now so I don't know what the legal situation will be in the future.

Yeah, all that. Not likely to ever get caught, really. But very much illegal.

Question for the techie guys. Are VPN worth using or is there some other way to protect a network? I have to admit I am not real sure about VPN and any and all help is great. Thanks in advance.

I have an AppleTV, Roku 2, and FireStick. I like the fire stick, but prefer the interface of the Roku. Rarely use the AppleTV, but it's good for pr0n mirroring from iPhone.

    Of course

We got a jailbroken firestick around Christmas time. It's been nice to watch some of the best picture nominees in HD while they're still in theaters. We're burning through what's left on our DVR and then dropping our cable.

VPN is used to connect to your network remotely and protect your Internet traffic between the network and the remote user.

Got a Fire Stick for Christmas. Was really hoping to drop Dish Network...definitely not yet.

Jailbroke it. Works like crap. Will be trying to do it again to see if it actually works. I also heard the Fire Sticks last 1.5 years due to them being plugged in all the time. You can unplug them, but that may reset some things. Not too thrilled about that either.

Our fire stick is almost 2 and a half years old and it still works fine.
