End Black History Month

  • Belly35
Isn't it about time .. why a month?
What next Muslin Monday, Asia April, Native America Indian afternoon and next will be LGT weekend.... St.Patrick day does not count because every one is a little Irish and beer is involved.
As long as Blacks and Whites have this ideology of separation, the relationship will be hindered. We and Them as a Country shouldn't we be over that.

Belly doesn't like Black History month. Not surprised.

I used to think CC was the worst. My mind is changing.

Is there something that occurs during BHM that effects your life?
I don't think any further entitlements are given out because of it.
It is just a remembrance of the past so it is not forgotten.

If anything should be removed from the calendar, it should be honoring that horrible bastard human Chris Columbus.

I sometimes see affirmative action generating similar responses. Singling out a separate month DOES create a sort of "minor league" of history that you need a separate category because they don't otherwise make the cut.

Drop women's and black history month and just include them in days where you recognize everyone regardless of race, sex, etc.. You don't even have to limit it to one person a day.

If you think about it, it does connote some level of inferiority....which is a disservice to those people and their accomplishments. Or is creating segregated categories really how we want to address racism and bigotry?

I completely understand and am fine with Black History Month. There are way too many people still living who feel that we should go back to the 1950's in terms of Jim Crow laws, not allowing all citizens to vote, etc........

I do wonder why we continue to have group created that promote segregation by blacks. I have the naive opinion that black people what to be equal....not separate. That is why I always wonder why we have the Black Congressional Caucus, Miss Black America, the Black Marketing Club, etc. Can anyone image the firestorm if we created the White Congressional Caucus, Miss White America, the White Marketing Club, etc?

Not to mention, blacks are like 12% of the population but only get one month - they're getting screwed out of 50% of their proportionate recognition.

The purpose and relevancy of things like this deteriorate over time and become less important on its own. But until then they just help create segregation and racism.

I don't completely disagree with the premise behind the OP, but I certainly disagree with the reasoning (or I guess follow-up thoughts) that he stated.

Firstly, the US is not ready to eliminate an isolated month to celebrate black history. We may never be. There is still too much racial tension. If, and only if, we get over that hump, then "black history" should simply be integrated into "American history."

Celebrating race, that only fuels racism. Celebrating culture, that's a different subject entirely. What people need to realize is that we are all one race, accumulated by different cultures.

The sooner the world eliminates the portrayals of "race" and/or "ethnicity" the better. However, that can never be done as long as people are still ignorant enough to judge others based on those portrayals.

    Just my $.02.

There were 200 years, give or take, where we had such things. The word white was just assumed.

Is there some dividing line where relevance starts and ends?

At what point does using current racism to address historical racism become counter productive?
