8 to 5 type job ... Sucks

  • Belly35
For over 40 years I have never had to work a job from 8 to 5 or a schedule time work environment.
Im on the road or traveling now with this new national vp position but those days that im not traveling, I have to be in the office 8 to 5 this sucks.
Im more use to coming and going as I wanted ( that the advantage of ownership). Come in early work late, take the next day off, work late 1/2 day or just free wheeling the next day.
How in the hell do you function doing a scheduled work day job it sucks and I can't get anything done at home. I have to cram everything into the weekend... Hell I haven't been to the pistol range in two weeks...

you wanted a job because you were bored and now you're bitching about it

Can't even hack it at an 8-5? Wow, getting old is awful.

Also.. what kind of "national vp" works 8-5?
    most vp's work 7am-7pm here.

What kind of stuck in the past company is this? If a position is customer-facing or on an assembly line, specific hours make sense. Beyond that, getting the job done should be the requirement.

I'm guessing you wouldn't like night shift.
  • Sonofanump
Does not sound like fun, I think I'll avoid that kind of employment.

Accepts job, doesn't know the work hours/environment. LOL

Also I wish I had an 8-5. I work 9 to 9 MF and a few hours on the weekend.

Does not sound like fun, I'll take my 25-30 hour a week salary employment for about 40 of the 48 weeks a year.

Maybe you could work 9-5 if you didn't have 24,000 posts on a message board.

There's still a lot of big companies out there stuck in the 8-5 routine. I work for a major manufacturing/retail company in Cleveland and we're still very much of the "you're only working if you're in your office/cube" mentality. We invest who knows how much in mobile capabilities for everyone (iphones and laptops) but I guess leadership doesn't realize that work outside our walls as well. It's old school management philosophy that you can't trust your people to work if you're not monitoring them. If you can't trust them to work why are you hiring them?

...or longer hours depending on the corporation! Some of our VP's go into meetings with the owner at 5pm that don't end until midnight & then start all over again around 9.

This quickly became a good thread to hand out reps just due to the pure comedic gold it began with.

I get my work done but I usually have a lot of lag time between completing work and the next task of the day. I can't leave at 5 because I have to have conference calls from people overseas who are in different timezones. The good part is I am able to work from home if needed but I prefer the office on some days.

I work 8-5, and I don't mind it. If I have to have set hours, these work for me. We are transitioning to working from home, but even then I will need to be available from 8-5 daily. That is when the majority of our customers work, and we have to be available for them.

Too bad you didn't save properly for retirement. I know that it must be a difficult choice every day between working 9 hours or eating cat food.

Pretty sure a year ago or so you were saying you worked about 25 hours a week but were in the office 40 for appearances. Then said something to the effect of not being able to complete your work in under 40 hours means you suck at your job blah blah I'm an excel wizard blah blah.
