Good news/bad news
-
FatHobbitEver have one of those days (weeks) where you get some good news followed by some bad news?
I had my review earlier this week. I did pretty well which didn't surprise me. I received basically a cost of living raise which didn't surprise me and also got a pretty decent bonus which did surprise me. And then they told me they are no longer going to have employees in Ohio. My choice is to relocate to Atlanta or be downsized.
I don't really have any interest in moving so I'm sending out my resume and waiting to see how long I get before they force me to make a decision. -
queencitybuckeyeDon't know what you do, is telecommuting an option?
-
sleeperThat's unfortunate. I wouldn't want to live in Atlanta.

It doesn't sound like it. I've been telecommuting for the past year and they have hinted that they would like me there but I just got a new supervisor and she is in Atlanta. Previously my supervisor was in Kansas but I was working with the Atlanta team.queencitybuckeye;1783485 wrote:Don't know what you do, is telecommuting an option? -

I'm 99% sure I'm not going to go. I just need to find a new job before they tell me I have to go now.sleeper;1783487 wrote:That's unfortunate. I wouldn't want to live in Atlanta. -

Yeah, Atlanta sucks ass.sleeper;1783487 wrote:That's unfortunate. I wouldn't want to live in Atlanta. -
gutYou can probably milk them for at least a month on temporary housing, or at least commute a while longer until you "find a place".
I don't think Atlanta would be bad. Buckhead is a pretty decent area, though your commute could suck depending on what side of downtown the job is. -

Many more cities have much more to offer than Atlanta. Just a sprawling city with a lot of dead spots. I'm pretty surprised they got the Olympics.gut;1783498 wrote:You can probably milk them for at least a month on temporary housing, or at least commute a while longer until you "find a place".

SportsAndLadyI'd go.

iclfan2Maybe you can pull off some severance to have some more time to find a job. Atlanta would be cool if you could mostly telecommute from there. But the commutes there if the company is downtown is a disaster.

I have been stuck in that traffic when I've been there for team meetings and it's horribleiclfan2;1783528 wrote:Maybe you can pull off some severance to have some more time to find a job. friendfromlowryAt least you wouldn't have to deal with much of a shitty, cold winter (assume you live somewhere now that you do)

FatHobbitI'm not sure that anybody cares, but here is an update that makes me lol. I've accepted a new position in the company in a different division and my last day is Friday. The people who are supposed to be taking over my work are so busy they've only come to about half the knowledge transfer meetings that have been scheduled. I just got out of a meeting where they were complaining about a lack of resources and that they might have to bring in consultants to get this done. That's well within their rights as an employer but it makes me lol that they think someone can come in from off the street and pick up where I left off. I would be curious to know how long it takes them to get up to speed and then how much longer it takes them to finish. Assuming they are able to do it right without fucking it all up.

this is a natural reaction when vacating any position, but is applicable to very few jobs.FatHobbit;1797019 wrote: but it makes me lol that they think someone can come in from off the street and pick up where I left off..
everyone is replaceable -

True. If a CEO or CFO can be fired and replaced with essentially no hand-off, pretty much anyone can.MontyBrunswick;1797035 wrote:this is a natural reaction when vacating any position, but is applicable to very few jobs.

FatHobbitI don't disagree that anyone can be replaced. I'm sure they can replace me easily enough probably even with someone who is a better developer than I am. What they won't get is someone who understands the software better than me (at least not for a least 6 months) and the people who do understand it won't have time to explain it to them.
