we get it, you like guns.

"Every constitution, then, and every law, naturally expires at the end of nineteen years. If it be enforced longer, it is an act of force, and not of right." - Thomas Jefferson said that. Enough with your 2nd amendment bullshit, we get it!

Surprised that a business owner originally from Israel would post a "Criminal Protection Zone" sign on the door. Bet it comes down.

Edit: The "no guns" sign turned out to be from the business next door, and the restaurant wasn't posted.

I actually clicked on this "Serious Business" forum to start a thread concerning the fact that I'm in the market for a handgun.

Low and behold, belly has a thread about guns! #Ironic

But anywho, I'm looking for a solid piece, functional for CCW, but also something capable of decapitating someone who intrudes into my house. Or, if I choose to shoot below the next, separating torso from legs.

    Any thoughts?

This article explains fairly well the trade-offs someone needs to consider (the "5 C's") when choosing a concealed handgun.

    http://www.handgunsmag.com/concealed-carry/choose-carry-gun-5-cs-concealed-carry/

In terms of specifics, the gun for you is the gun you can (and will) shoot. Buying a Dirty Harry wrist-breaker is probably not the best option if it's not fun to shoot, and will likely go into your safe and stay there. Practicing allowing you to put bullets on target will be far more productive in a bad situation than a larger caliber that you never shoot.

As far as brands, any of the guns from the big names (Glock, Ruger, Sig Sauer, Smith & Wesson, Springfield just to name a few) will fulfill the main requirement of a defensive weapon, which is when you pull the trigger, it goes bang. Beyond that, it's really a matter of feel.

Qcb very good article. One other aspect is "storage".. Buy a weapon with the mentality to keep it in the dresser or on the night stand .. You stupid mofo. If you don't have the money to invest in a gun safe or small pistol safe .. Grow up and save up.
I have three pistol safes with gun, mag, flash light and ammo.. Digital key pad, bolted to the wall... Less than 5 seconds I'm locked, loaded and in a attack prepared or defensive position...
The safe lets me be prepared at night and the family grandkids protected.

to carry I like the sig 238 .380 small and light the five round mag is lacking but addition mag is not a big deal.
For home full size sig p220 .45 extended mag for extra rounds.

Big round provides stopping power but if you cant hit shit it meaningless. Become competent with your weapon and your weapon will provide the stopping power.

buy a gun get a safe and be safer

    Thx, QCB & belly.

I plan to get a safe the same day. Most likely keypad entry.

Agree with the above. If you are a complete rookie, enroll in a gun class to learn about safety and operation and go to the range with a competent instructor who can give you pointers on operation, grip, targeting, cleaning etc. While at the range, you can rent different kinds of guns, and try them to see what feels comfortable to you both in caliber and how it fits your hand.
Having done all that, now you are ready to choose your weapon.

Hits: I have a range about 5 miles from my house. Would like to hit it up once a month but a) it can be expensive and b) some schedule changes are coming my way.

I'd love to be able to put down three handguns in front of me and spend time feeling them out. But I'm not sure if that is possible.

A buddy of mine told me he and his wife stopped down to that range about a month ago. I asked him if he had a handgun. He said they just bought one. He brought it over yesterday - Glock 19 gen4. Looked nice. Felt nice. Seemed like a reasonable price ($550). Looking to shoot it and two others like it from S&W, Ruger, and, just because, a Sig.

The G19 is kind of the Honda Accord of guns, and I mean that in the most positive way possible. Reliable as can be, great shooting gun, very popular. My personal choice is the G43, which is the 19's infant brother. I prefer to pocket carry, and am willing to give up the extra (double) capacity for size. If it feels good in your hand (and you can shoot it reasonably well), there would be nothing at all wrong with that choice.

    I like my Sig....

If you're looking for a home weapon than a full size is the way to go. Full size 9mm 20 plus round with extend mag, great to shoot at the range. For my home I go with the Sig .45 p220 8 rounds standard extend mag 14? Big Bang, power and when that rail flies forward ... Anyone who knows anything about guns knows that sound means business.

Full size weapon are a pain to carry now days

choosing a 9mm or .380 conceal carry size weapon ....really it not the size of the hole but whole grouping at center mass.

i will get a Sig 938 9mm someday soon but for now the Sig 238 .380 pocket carry does the job and easy to shoot. The wife love this weapon also. She can pull the rail back quickly, fits her hands, little kick and not heavy... Better than any .22
