Jeopardy

  Has anyone here ever tried to get on the show? I've taken the test for about three years now and haven't had any luck. Tonight was the best I have done; I think I got about 45 out of 50. I don't know where the average falls for people who get an in-person tryout, though. I've always enjoyed the trivia and usually throw the show on if I'm home at 7:30.

  45 out of 50? Salute! I can't touch that. I've taken the on-line test a few times, and it seems to be much harder than trying to answer questions during the show. My house must be in a time warp, because the clock always seems to be moving faster than normal during the test .....

  Haha it's definitely a matter of luck. This time I think I had read every literary question that came up, and I happened to know the current event questions. That isn't always the case. I've never had trouble with their math/science or sports questions. I think on previous tests I've usually been in the 30-40 range. The 15 second timer is a killer if you have to change an answer.

  I've never taken the test...I don't think I would have much of a chance. But I do watch the show quite often. I've found it if you have an in depth knowledge of the subject, the questions aren't very tough. Just think of how easy the sports questions are...they are easy because you have good knowledge of the subject. Now if you had that same background in Shakespeare, those questions would be just as easy.
  
  I don't know enough about classical arts/literature, European history, Kings and Queens...etc to ever get on the show.

  I do ok when I'm playing along depending on the categories. I'm sure it's completely different when you're on the show under pressure.

  Most of the correct responses are common sense and simpler than we tend to think, so part of it is quickly breaking down the "answer" to see if the "question" is fairly obvious.
  
  The other part is, of course, timing that darned buzzer.

  Does anyone else ever watch, and you are just kicking ass on jeopardy and feeling really smart only to realize it's high school/college jeopardy?

  These are the best. I try to make it through the high school episodes without missing a question but I've never been successful. Within 2-3 a few times.

  Back in the day, I once rented (or was it owned) a Jeopardy game on the NES. I was the total bomb on it. Never mind minor details like:
  
  1. The computer opponents seemed rigged to usually be slow on the draw and if they weren't, it was because they were "throwing" a question. Which happened pretty often, so they never scored that well.
  
  2. Most of the questions were a lot easier than non-HS/college jeopardy, because you had to use the control pad to move around an on-screen keyboard to "type" your answer, so they have to be short.
  
  3. The system didn't have much memory, so after a few rounds of it, you'd start getting repeat questions, making it even easier.

  I think I had that game. I remember having to type in answers on the control pad, and Trebek would do this awkward clap. The characters looked absolutely ridiculous too.
