Dad arrested for taking 12 year old daughter's cell phone

  What a mess. He took his daughter's cell phone and her mom (his ex girlfriend) called the cops. I think it's pretty ballsy that he asked for a jury trial. He was probably right, but I don't know that I would have said no when the cops were arresting me.

  this is a bunch of bullshit. i get taking the phone from the daughter, but i see no way to defend not giving it back to the mother (i.e. the owner). Texas is a fucked up place (hence the fact that Trump will win this state twice in the next 10 months).

  I haven't read anywhere that the mother asked for the phone back. She just called the police, which escalated the situation. She should try learning to co-parent, and also how to not be a ****. This is a parenting issue, not a criminal one.

  Agreed, when the daughter told the mom, a simple call from the mom to the dad should suffice. I bet that if the mom had called the dad, they discussed what happened and came to an agreement on duration, the mom would have got the phone back.
  
  Unfortunately, when there is a breakup most of the time at least one of the two are so pissed/hurt they can't be rational about any parenting discussions.

  Police officers showed up at Jackson’s door to retrieve the phone, but the father refused to hand it over.
  
  
  speaking about co-parenting, he has to honor his ex's right to not punish the kid when she has her, just like the mom has to honor his.

  That's my point, though. Instead of trying to work it out with the dad, the mom called the police. Perhaps that is not how it went down, but I can only go by what I have read.

  This is what I was thinking. Even if he she called the Cops right away, she's an asshole for calling the cops...and he's an asshole for not just giving it to the cops when they came and asked for it.

  I think the mom was complaining because the judge said the father could keep the phone even though she pays the cell phone bill and has receipts proving she purchased the phone. While I agree with the father on disciplining his child as he sees fit, he should have given the phone back to the mother.

  Well, considering at the end of the article the father states he will now not have a relationship with his daughter and needs to separate himself from her and her mother, to me, means there is much more to this story and he is probably not the great father trying to discipline, and raise his daughter the right way, he is portraying himself to be. There is information we are not getting in this article. What kind of father is that easily willing to forego a relationship with his daughter?

  There is something absolutely wrong with this story. I get taking a kids phone as punishment. But wouldn't you think you would hand it over and tell the mom when you gave the kid back? You would think they would have had an argument right then. (Which if I'm reading the article correctly did not happen) If he refused to give the phone back then, he's an asshole. But I can see how maybe he didn't mention it and the mom found out later that the kid didn't have her phone and that dad took it. So then she just calls the cops without talking to him? She's an asshole too. Or the article leaves out a bunch of information. But if the mom did want the phone back and the dad just refused, why would the judge side with him?

  It's Texas. Didn't a judge let a kid off the hook down there because of "Affluenza" after he plowed over some people with his car drunk? Everything is bigger in Texas, including the level of crazy.
