Raw Dawgin' it
What if it said there is no god or there is no god but jesus? Doubt you'd call for a firing then. Any type of religion should be left out of schools.Belly35;1769730 wrote:Do you have a problem with this:

raiderbuckIt's definitely manipulative. So yea, that teacher should be punished. Was she aware of what she was writing? We learned calligraphy in school, but we wrote out letters from the alphabet.
-
FatHobbitI'm not 100% sure, but I think that statement is a common statement for learning Arabic. Kind of like "hello world" for programmers if you're familiar with that. I don't think she should be fired but they should choose a new example.
-
sherm03Huge stretch to say that she needs to be fired. It's not like it was translated, and she didn't make the kids recite it.
It's just a poor example that the teacher decided to use. Tell her to leave religion out of the classroom and find a new example. Then move the fuck on because there's nothing to see here. -
dwccrewWhy should the teacher be fired? The teacher didn't express that was her view and wasn't even preaching anything, she was using an example of calligraphy to demonstrate a different cultures communication. It's a World Geography class, this is the type of things you learn. Could she have used a better example? More than likely, however, she was not trying to make a point about what the statement was, just how it was written. Islamaphobia is really taking off here in the US.

SportsAndLadyThere is 0 issue here.

Laley23No issue at all.
Hell if anything, looks like a school purchased workbook that the teacher was simply using in her lesson plan. -

I agree. Nowhere does it mention they were discussing the translation in class, “There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah.”SportsAndLady;1769838 wrote:There is 0 issue here.
"According to parents, students were not informed of the translation or of the specific meaning of the Arabic text the students were being asked to copy."
I sometimes feel bad for children of such idiots. "A parent tells Rob Shilling students were shown a Koran during the lesson, but not the Bible, because, according to the teacher, “all of the students already have read or seen a Bible.”“I do not trust her to teach my son and regardless of the outcome he will not sit in her classroom. I am in the process of forgiving her but I do not trust her,” a parent told Shilling."
The parent is some closed minded Christian obviously...unfuckingbelievable
Exactly. I'm think I had the same class/home work project when I was in Jr.H or HS.Laley23;1769841 wrote:No issue at all.

sleeperReligion is dumb. I'm okay with editing the first amendment to add "You do not have the freedom to be a fucking moron" which would entirely negate the freedom of religion.

iclfan2Definitely a problem here. Why the fuck are they using an Arabic phrase about Muhammad for calligraphy? The same assholes on this thread would be pissed if it said Jesus. My elementary school never had me writing Arabic bullshit so not sure why it is a thing now.

Ask yourself this question...if you did not know what that writing meant, would you still be as pissed about it?iclfan2;1769859 wrote:Definitely a problem here. And no, if it said Jesus, I wouldn't be pissed because I'm not a crotchety old man that gets pissed over trivial shit. -
iclfan2
To me, no. But I can see why parents would be upset. I just find it mostly hypocritical because anytime Christianity is mentioned at school people flip there shit, yet saying Muhammad is the profit of God people are fine with.SportsAndLady;1769866 wrote:But is it that big of a deal to you?

If they were to write "Jesus is our savior" we wouldn't hear about it because people would be "fine with it"iclfan2;1769882 wrote:To me, no. But I can see why parents would be upset. That's not true. People get upset about Christianity in schools, too.SportsAndLady;1769885 wrote:If they were to write "Jesus is our savior" we wouldn't hear about it because people would be "fine with it"

Lol I didn't say people don't get upset about Christianity in schools. There's a big difference in a huge portrait of Jesus on the wall of a public school. And an Islamic phrase written out in Arabic in a textbook that teaches how to write Arabic (I think that's what it was).Fab4Runner;1769896 wrote:That's not true. But you said people would be find with kids writing Jesus is our savior. I am sure a lot of people would be fine with that....but many would not.SportsAndLady;1769897 wrote:Lol I didn't say people don't get upset about Christianity in schools. AutomatikNon-issue.

FatHobbit
I'm not fine with muhammad or Jesus being taught in school. They just need to change it and move on. If they won't change it, then I think it's about issue. (Which is where I think a lot of people get fired up about teachers pushing Christianity. They sometimes refuse to stop.)Fab4Runner;1769899 wrote:But you said people would be find with kids writing Jesus is our savior. AutomatikReligion has no place in our public school system.

It was calligraphy, which is nothing more than an art class of decorative writing. Like the link said, the meaning was never discussed.

Fab4RunnerTo be clear, I have no issue with this particular lesson. I was just refuting the statement that no one would have had a problem if it had said Jesus is our savoir. I do not think that is true.
