TiernanChuck Berry is often given credit by Clapton, Richards, Knoffler and Page as the greatest guitar player of all time.
Hendrix met Chuck once and told him he wished someday he could be that good.
two guys that are seldom mentioned but known by musicians themselves as phenomenal guitarists are Keith Urban and Brad Paisley -
hasbeenRobert Johnson

Laley23Chuck Berry
Eric Clapton
John Mayer
Jimi Hendrix
Carlos Santana -
Dr Winston O'BoogieI rank mine by their ability to create a unique sound. Whether that constitutes a "five best" on technical grounds, I don't know. I just know that when the following guys play, I can tell it's them practically from the very first note and I never mistake them for anyone else.
Mark Knopfler
George Harrison
Eddie Van Halen
Angus Young
Kirk Hammett -
SonofanumpLed Zeppelin is probably my favorite group ever, but I would not put Jimmy Page in my top 40 of guitarist.
In order:
Hendrix
Berry
Clapton
Allman
Segovia
Vaughn
Johnson
Santana
Knopfler
Morello
Les Paul
Townsend
Buckingham
David Gilmor
Nancy Wilson -
Dr Winston O'BoogieObviously there is a lot of subjectivity in something like this. Here's an opinion I know will bother many: I never cared for Jimi Hendrix's music. I'm sure he's a good guitarist, but I don't see that he is just above all others like many say. I don't like the songs he wrote very much either. I think it is the thing to do - to call him the greatest ever. But I attribute that mostly to his dying young.

Absolutely, you put Harrison on your list and i think the best guitar work on any Beatles song is on While My Guitar Gently Weeps.Dr Winston O'Boogie;1762972 wrote:Obviously there is a lot of subjectivity in something like this. -

One of my favorite songs & Harrison was brilliant on it.Sonofanump;1762983 wrote:Absolutely, you put Harrison on your list and i think the best guitar work on any Beatles song is on While My Guitar Gently Weeps. -

Clapton plays a good guitar on that song. My list was comprised of guitarists that I feel have a very distinct sound - as opposed to being perhaps the most technically adept. I will grant you that Clapton is a great guitarist - no doubt about that.Sonofanump;1762983 wrote:Absolutely, you put Harrison on your list and i think the best guitar work on any Beatles song is on While My Guitar Gently Weeps. -

Wolves of BabylonGreatest is tough because if you want technical skill guys like John Petrucci, Steve Vai and Yngwie Malmsteen are amazing. In fact Metal guitarist will top most lists for technical skill but then you have the other half who have a sound or play with emotion and that is where Hendrix, Clapton and many blues players come into the fray.
My favorite players are in no order
Alex Lifeson-Rush. He seems to get left off a lot of lists because Neal Peart and Geddy Lee get a lot of the fame.
Kirk Hammet-Metallica. Enjoy his soloing. Not the toughest or fastest out there to play but memorable.
Gary Clark Jr-See him live if you can, amazing player
Angus Young- Main reason I wanted to play guitar watching my dad play AcDC when I was little
Jimmy Page- just because I love Zep.
