Football Town: Barrow, AK
-
bigkahunaNFL Network premiered a documentary series on Barrow, AK football last night.
If you've never heard of the town, it's the northern most town in the US. It's 300 some miles north of the Arctic Circle. The school there has a football team, and they play on the banks of the Arctic Ocean. I saw a short documentary on the school a few years ago, and this series caught my eye. The first episode was really good, and I'll be tuning in from now on.

CenterBHSFanSeems odd to put a field right there. Any particular reason why it is being structured so close?

hasbeenDidn't watch the episode. Have seen some things about it.
It probably sucks playing up there, you have 4 other schools within 3 hours? (I have no idea about Alaska's geography, population, or school system". -

Limited choices is my guess.CenterBHSFan;1752728 wrote:Seems odd to put a field right there. Any particular reason why it is being structured so close?

In week 1, they played a team from Juneau, AK. That's about 1300 miles away. Juneau is a 9hr. flight to Barrow. By comparison, it's a 6hr. flight to San Francisco from Juneau.hasbeen;1752744 wrote:Didn't watch the episode. Have seen some things about it.

I'm not sure why they chose to have the field on the banks of the ocean, but it's definitely a home field advantage for them. I guess during some games, people actually stand on the ice of the ocean to watch the game.
HS football in Alaska is a whole nother animal. I think only 30-40 schools actually field a team. Think about how many teams are in some of the biggest counties in Ohio to compare that to. It really is a different world up there. -
hasbeenI sure hope one of those buildings is a bar for the coaches to go to after the game.
