Anyone been to Savannah GA?

  My baby boy graduates boot camp in Fort Benning in October, so I'm trying to turn this trip into a nice vacation. We're driving, and the only place in GA that looks like it could be interesting is Savannah.
  
  Any suggestions on places to stay or where to eat? Things to do?

  I have spent some time there for work and it is a great city to spend some time in. We are actually thinking about doing a weekend there in Oct for my wife's 40th Birthday celebration.
  
  The best part about the city is this:
  
  In the Savannah Historic District of Downtown Savannah, Georgia, city law allows possession and consumption on the street of one alcoholic beverage in an open plastic container of not more than 16 ounces.[SUP][12][/SUP] Because Georgia has no state public open container law, the city law governs. Throughout the rest of Savannah, however, open containers remain prohibited.
  
  There are some great restaurants and bars downtown. My favorite place to eat a nice meal is The Olde Pink House; for BBQ I like Wiley's. A couple cool pubs are Molly MAcPherson's and Six Pence Pub. A great beer selection at Barracuda Bob's. There is also an awesome dueling pianos saloon called Savannah Smiles.
  
  There are a lot of tours/sight-seeing guides you can take on history and ghost/vampires. Along the riverfront, there are a lot of shops and you can see the cargo ships coming in and out as well.
  
  You will only be about 45 minutes from Hilton Head and lots of things to do, see there as well.

  Savannah is awesome. I don't remember much about my time there, other than thinking "man, this town rocks."

  Savannah is nice. If you want to relax check out Beufort, SC and the surrounding islands like Fripp and Harbour.

  No advice about Savannah. But thank your son for his service. My brother graduated from Ft. Benning in August of 2004. The heat and humidity...omg. It was unpleasant.

  I'm thinking I'll get a hotel downtown/historic district and we'll just play it by ear. My husband loves history and open carry. (Alcohol, not gun.) Been to HH so just want to go somewhere new. May go to Tybee Island for a day to spend a little beach time.
  
  I feel soooo bad for my son, it's been in the high 90's since he got there. He's loving it though. And a free bloomin' onion? Hell, I'd join for that.

  I've been there about a decade ago. Can't specify any restaurants by name, but there's a riverside district/area close by the downtown that has some good places for seafood. I remember that much!
  
  And the downtown area is great for sight-seeing. Tybee's a good place, too. Went there one afternoon when I was there.

  My brother also graduated boot camp at Benning, congrats. I'm not a fan of Savannah that much (probly spoiled from living in CHS), one day is enough to walk the downtown area. Agree w/ the pink house recommendation. And drinks on river street.
  
  For relaxation, Tybee is fun. We stayed in a bnb for 3 nights last year and it was a good time. (Desoto was the name). You have the beach, and a bunch of little bars and restaurants. We rented bikes and didn't get in the car the entire time we were there.

  I freakin' love Savannah. I'm stationed just south of there, and go there every chance I get. It has, hands down, the best St Patty's day celebration anywhere in the country. And yes, I have been to both Boston and NY for it.

  i visited numerous times when my dad was in the marines. i'm sure it's changed quite a bit in 20 years

  i lived there for a few years about 7-8 years ago. everyone else pretty much sums it up. you can hit up Tybee Island for the beach and plenty of seafood places along the riverfront. plenty of historic tours and since you will be there in October, the ghost tours should be in full swing. and of course if you are a fan of Forest Gump, plenty of movie sites around town.

  I lived there many years ago. Let me state that it's a great place to visit but a hell-hole to live in. I was especially fond of the aromatic emissions from the multiple paper and chemical plants. Regardless, it is full of history and that part I did enjoy. I don't know if the Pirate House restaurant is still around but it was a favorite tourist spot that was supposedly a setting in the book 'Treasure Island'. If you are really into history I suggest a quick trip to Fort Pulaski out toward Savannah Beach.

  Savannah is great. The wife and I went to Hilton Head last year and made the drive down to Savannah for a little day trip.
  
  Best decision we made was to hop on a trolly and take the historic tour. VERY cool (and cheap). We learned a lot about the city, saw many cool things that we would not have known about if we just walked around. You can hop on/off the trolly anytime you want, so if there's something you wanna check out it's pretty easy.
  
  I don't recall the name of the restaurant we ate at, but it was a little indoor/outdoor pub that was really good. Chippewa Square was pretty cool, and very recognizable from Forrest Gump.

  Remember if you are touring, they tour end in the afternoon, so tour early, it also helps avoid the heat.
