Home Security System
-
sherm03There's been some break-ins around my neighborhood lately and I think it's time to invest in some home security.
I'm already planning on getting a gun...which will be fine for while we are home. But I'm more concerned about when I'm on the road and my wife is home alone or on the road with me.
Anyone have a security system at their house? What company do you use? What types of equipment did you get and how much are you paying monthly for monitoring? -

friendfromlowryI've been debating getting something like Iris that Lowes sells. There's a couple different packages but I'd like something that has a couple of door/broken glass sensors.

sportchamppsVinint. We have had them for a few months so far and I really like them. We pay like $70 a month but that includes monitoring, a doorbell camera, a smart thermostat, and 2 cameras in the home. I love being able to change the thermostat from my cellphone from anywhere in the world. I use the doorbell camera and smart lock to let my mom in when she needs to let our dogs out and then lock it when she leaves from my phone. They include monitors for every window and door including the garage door.

As an ADT customer for the last 7 years, i really tend to agree with sportchamps here. I think Vivint gives you more bang for the buck as far as home security goes. With any of these companies though you'll have to watch the installation costs like a hawk. ADT offers the camera surveilance for like a $15/month upcharge and when we moved last time, i was going to have it hooked up and when they came to do the install is when they told me that the equipment was going to be like $450 bucks. I think for brand new customers they will bend over backwards to get you in, so really lean on them to give you as much shit as possible for as little money as you can.sportchampps;1741819 wrote:Vinint. For those wondering why i have ADT for 7 years and hate them, 3 year contracts, 4 homes in 7 years. -
sherm03I don't know if I need all of the extras like the doorbell camera, smart thermostat, or even cameras in the home. Our neighbors across the street have cameras and the cops basically haven't been able to do anything with the video that they have captured. So all I'm looking for is something that will sound an alarm and contact the police if someone tries to break in one of the doors or smashes a window. So $70/month seems crazy steep for what I am looking for.
Saw a couple people in that thread Belly posted use Simplisafe. Anyone else use them? I like that there's no contracts and it's fairly cheap at like $15-$20/month for monitoring. My wife also read something about Frontpoint. Anyone use them? -
