Ashley Madison Hack

  Surprised nobody's posted on this yet. What kind of legal action can be taken against the hackers if/when they release the names? I don't feel bad for a single cheater who gets wicked by this by the way. They deserve it. Although I do find it ironic that they now feel a complete betrayal of trust.

  Ashley Madison is a website where married people can go to have an affair. They've always boasted about how you can meet people discretely and I think they promised to keep it confidential. They got hacked today and now 37 million people's names could/will be released.

  I've actually never heard of the website myself. There's really nothing to comment about on this other than the dumb ass people who expose themselves to ignorant websites like this and not expect any type of repercussion. It's amazing how a human being is skewed into participating in buffoon websites like this.

  The current theory is the hacker was a former user and is trying to get the website to fix its "Delete All" feature which costs $20. Apparently, the delete all feature still leaves some payment data on the table and they want the delete all function to really get rid of all records.
  
  Sounds like someone with really strong computer skills got screwed and is now retaliating. As far as legal action, I have no idea but my guess is the names won't be released and some agreement will be had with the hackers.

  To the larger point, you need to basically operate under the assumption that every email, google search, text message, and website membership you have will eventually go public. The internet is not secure, and privacy will be pretty non-existent in 20 years or so.

  Eh, this doesn't seem like their particular brand of target. Those they usually target have either power or influence.
  
  While I think there should be a certain expectation of privacy when as much is stated in a company's privacy policy, you have to know that there will be people looking to exploit people's assumption of privacy.
  
  It's like locking your car doors. You expect that the locking mechanism does its job, but that doesn't necessarily stop someone from smashing the car's window or jimmying the lock open, and there is only so much fault you can put on the auto manufacturer for it.
  
  From the sound of it, it's more than just the names of the users that may come out. I had gathered that it was going to be their entire profile, which would include things such as likes, dislikes, fantasies, fetishes, etc. Pretty personal stuff.
  
  I do think it will be a good thing for people to find out if they have cheating spouses, though I'm not sure this way is a particularly good way (hearing it in a conversation straight from their partner would probably be more productive). However, what I might see as a major concern will be others in people's lives. These people's coworkers, family, neighbors, etc. will all be able to see things about them. More than anyone would probably want known about themselves when it comes to acquaintances.
  
  AM had to see this coming, though. At some point, their existence was going to piss off the wrong person.

  My first thought was this would be a wonderful blackmail opportunity for the hacker, but I guess that'd be fairly traceable. Oh well, the interwebs are dangerous.

  I was led to believe that the entirety of people's profiles will be made public: Pictures, names, fetishes, fantasies, etc.
