Child Discipline

  • bigkahuna
The Texas Biker thread got me thinking about this. How do you discipline your child?

Like I said on the Biker thread, I'm 29 and spank my kids, and I see nothing wrong with it. I was spanked as a kid, when it was needed and rarely got in trouble. I remember growing up, I was at my great aunt's house and did something wrong; she whooped my ass. My grandma came to pick me up, found out about it and whooped my ass again. My mom came home from work and also spanked me. Three separate spankings for the same thing; needless to say, I never did that shit again.

People around my age are in general shitty parents when it comes to discipline, and I guess our parents are the ones to blame for it.

More times than not, it's the actual "oh no, my parents are disappointed in me" aspect of the spanking that hurts more than the actual punishment. For instance, if our almost two year old grandson is bad, my girlfriend will give him a swat on the behind. Does it hurt? Very likely not because his diaper is so thick....but the psychological "grandma is mad at me" seems to hurt more than the actual deed.

Girl I went to high school with is now a social worker and I want to puke every time I see her "time out's are better for kids because they cause no physical pain/save the world/kumbaya" bullshit posts on Facebook.

One doesn't need to go all 'Adrian Peterson" on a kid to provide a deterrent.

Put the fear of God into them early and often! I was 6'5" 280 lb just graduated college football player and I was still wouldnt push my old man too far. It was a respect thing, with just a touch of I knew he would whoop my ass mixed in that kept me from becoming a total idiot! I am the same way with my children, we are their parents, not their friends.

Definitely will "swat" my kids. Already have with one a few times. She's learned too.

No doubt, we will use a variety of punishments though too.

...I have 2 kids and when they were young, I had to discipline them totally different. With my son I could correct him with just a look while my daughter was a different matter but neither ever had more than one or two cracks on their butts.

Belly chiming in on how great his discipline is in 3..2..1..

As parents paddling should be part of the process of raising kids, it not the control factor to bring them up with, its your job to teach them right and wrong, hard work dedication and self-control by example, by your standards of living and love. Family meals, faith, taking part in their lives, hobbies and education… your kids will some day be like you, do like you, have your standards of life style and have your faults also..
How you work around the house, how you take an interest in them and how you show love for them and your wife is all going to be a mirror image someday…

    I waited for you DD5

I agree with you. I'm not saying old school "get a switch" like my grandma used to do. They get 1-2 good whacks, but they're already upset before it even happens because they know I'm not happy with them.

I don't have kids, but I was spanked and I plan to do the same.

    Start low-level/pain and work up.

4cards: Similar to you our two (older son, younger daughter) were totally different. Saying "No" was enough to melt my son's heart. Once or twice it escalted to a "time out". My daughter got the same low level treatment but reached a swat with the hand and then a wooden spoon. After once with the spoon it didn't take much.

But if I may add, all the discipline in the world will have a lesser effect if it is not balanced by love. If my wife and I are not loving during the good times, the discipline during the bad times will have less effect.

And this concludes the "World According to cruiser_96". Thank you.

I think my 10 year old has received a spanking 3 times. Putting in timeout and taking away privileges is usually enough for a contrarian.

My wife on the other hand receives spankings from me about once a week...

I am the youngest of 4 boys and my Dad whooped our ass with the belt. I now have 4 boys of my own and I whoop their ass also...just not with a belt. It is becoming easier to just take privileges away, but some things they do warrant an ass kicking.

I am one of four boys as well, and my parents would have had no chance without spanking as a tool. It was basically the only language that got into our brains looking back. They could tell us to do something many times but we wouldn't move unless there was a physical threat coming our way.

I was spanked and paddled as a kid but I was never once abused. There's a huge difference. I plan on doing the same when I am a parent.
  • Tiernan
Spank with an open hand on a child's bottom simply emphasizes that their behavior is unacceptable and they realize you are disappointed and they need to change that behavior. Anyone who interprets a swat as "abuse" is an idiot and 1) doesn't have children or 2) has dumbass children.
