Kamado grills

    Looking to buy a new grill. Anyone have any advice on kamados. Is the BGE and Kamado Joe worth the big price tag or will the Home Depot vision pro do the job. What about the Akorn at 1/4 the price?

    I have the Akorn, I really like it. There is a website called kamado guru that is pretty helpful on ways to cook, etc. If you have the extra cash, ceramic would be the way to go to be able to keep temps consistently the easiest. I think you would get the most bang for your buck not getting a BGE.

    My parents have a primo xl which is great but way bigger than I need, I saw primo makes an oval that's a little cheaper than the BGE including the nest. My uncle has a cypress bayou classic but I saw they are currently discontinued on their website. Thanks for your info on the akorn

    Yea, kamado joe has a toon of videos on YouTube. And like I said that forum is great, and people review the grills they have too.
    How into it are you? For $300, the Akron is a great starter level. I have made pizzas, ribs, pork tenderloins, etc (no pork butt yet), and it is becoming easier to control the heat every time I do it. The only other upgrades would be to get a maverick 732 thermometer, as the ones on the units themselves are not accurate. I went entry level to make sure I'd like it and use it.

    I want to be really into it. I actually just talked to a local dealer who is having an "Eggfest" Saturday. 10% off everything egg. So might head out there.

    I have gone back to the simple round Weber charcoal grill using the chimney starter (w paper; no lighter fluid). It is simple, better tasting, add wood chips as desired etc..... I don't think I will ever use a propane grill again. I am also big into smoking with my Weber charcoal smoker.

    In my opinion, there is a time and place for both. I like the convenience of propane for quick weeknight meals on the grills. I don't want to fuss with charcoal to throw a couple chicken breasts on the grill that only need 10-15 minutes to cook.

    ^^ I understand. Generally I can get the charcoal grill heated up in 15 minutes, which simultaneously allows me to have a beer and uncork a bottle of wine. Grilling without a few pops is never a good thing.

    Thanks for the input...already have a propane and charcoal grill...this is about Kamado!
