Germanwings Plane crashes over the Alps

SportsAndLady148 people on board. All feared to be dead.

Old RiderConfirms why I hate flying so much. Its nice to get to your destination quicker by flying, but I would rather drive if I can. Just do not like the idea of letting some guy I don't know in charge of my life 35,000 feet in the air in an aluminum can!

It's so much more dangerous to drive than fly.Old Rider;1715992 wrote:Confirms why I hate flying so much. Its nice to get to your destination quicker by flying, but I would rather drive if I can. In a plane, you are letting one trained professional control your life. In a car, you are letting thousands of random people control your life. -
Fab4RunnerThe older I get, the more nervous I am about flying. I really have no idea why. I am not scared per se, but I just know that if I am in a plane crash, I will most likely die. If I am in a car accident, that is not the case.
Anyway, it doesn't bother me all that much. I will still fly with no problem. -

Wait until you have children at home. Gives you a different perspective.SportsAndLady;1715996 wrote:It's so much more dangerous to drive than fly.

Also, in a car, you still have the element of control. You have zero (personal) control on an airplane. -

I feel like children would affect your view more negatively of driving than flying. How's the number of fatalities in plane crashes vs car crashes compare? I totally get the whole "one person controlling your life" argument, but I'd rather have one person controlling my life and not thousands of random indiviudals. Anybody can get a driver's license. The moron with no common sense, the murderer, etc. You have to be highly trained and have great character to be a commercial airline pilot.like_that;1716010 wrote:How does children give you a different perspective? -

What on earth does that have to do with what I said?ernest_t_bass;1716009 wrote:Wait until you have children at home. Gives you a different perspective.

It entirely depends on where you drive and in what conditions. Follow the law and don't speed helps a lot too.SportsAndLady;1716020 wrote:Okay, Said.
Point is, malfunctions happen on anything mechanical. If 30k feet in the air, the only law you need to worry about is gravity. -

Now that I have children, I feel differently about getting on a plane, even though they are statistically safer. The thought that the plane could crash, thinking of them not having a father, etc., is more common when boarding a plane, rather than driving. To me, anyway.SportsAndLady;1716018 wrote:What on earth does that have to do with what I said? -

265 deaths in an airplane worldwide in 2013.
Any questions? -

Lol I've never gotten on a plane and thought about dying. Not once. It's so safe to fly these days especially in the US.ernest_t_bass;1716022 wrote:Now that I have children, I feel differently about getting on a plane, even though they are statistically safer. When I have kids I'm not going to be thinking about dying and certainly will not on a plane. -

like_thatI will admit, sometimes turbulence does get the best of me (seems to be that way the older I get), but if I had a choice between long road trip vs flight I am taking the flight every time.
I don't have children but I can't see how that would change anything. I think I would be way more concerned about my 16 year old teenager driving around than taking a flight. -
Dr Winston O'BoogieI don't mind flying at all. I believe fear of flying is an emotion that can't be argued out of someone, so I don't bother trying. It's an irrational fear, but it is real to the person having it. I think it all goes to the need for control. Despite us all wanting to control our fate, none of us do. A meteor could strike anyone dead today. The good thing about a plane crash is there's usually little suffering.

GOONx19The only time I ever worry on a plane is the one second between flying and landing. Once I feel the wheels hit the ground and I'm not dead, that's gone.
-
Terry_TateFlying used to absolutely freak me out and give me terrible stomachaches. I would have to find out what plane we were flying then look up all kinds of facts about it to tell myself that we wouldn't crash while I was flying. I've probably flown 30ish times now and I don't think about any of that for more than 5 seconds now. Once you do it enough the fear part of it just goes away, or at least in my experience it does.
There are around 100,000 flights in the world every single day. It really is incredible to me how so few incidents there are with how many flights happen every day. -
Con_AlmaSounds like a bunch of German school kids were on the flight.

Old RiderYeah...the stats obviously show more car wrecks resulting in casualties. My point was I have a better chance of surviving a car wreck than I do falling from 35,000 feet in the air.
I can swerve my car, hit breaks, honk horns, and maybe the airbag goes off to assist as well. In a plane I have none of that. Im at the mercy of the pilot and the last mechanic who gave it the OK to take to the air!!
I like my chances behind the wheel! -

True, and I doubt it means anything but if you die in an airplane crash you are certain it isnt your fault. I dont have a fear of flying or anything like that, but I have some issue with if I would be in a car crash and someone else died it would just eat at me non stop even if it wasnt my fault. If the accident was my fault, man I am not sure I could live with myself.Dr Winston O'Boogie;1716052 wrote:I don't mind flying at all.
