  My neighbors house burned to the ground last night. It was insane and watching the fire fighters battle that thing in the cold was crazy. A lot of respect for those guys, they were covered in ice after spraying.

  Our house fire was in January 2003. It was like 12°, and there was a snowstorm. School was cancelled the next day.
  
  Definitely didn't stop the entire town from coming out to watch, though. Free entertainment.

  It's ridiculous how pussified schools are nowadays. My former HS has a rule no outside practice if below 35 degrees.
  Unfortunately the football team has not made the playoffs for around 20 years. It would be funny if the superintendent made the team practice indoors right before the playoffs....

  Quite a few schools had delays this morning, in the counties north, east and south but hardly any in our county.
  They say they dont want kids waiting for the bus in the cold. Well......why cant they just walk out to the bus when they see it coming? Hell, they do that when it is raining

  Some schools even let out early when it gets too hot outside. Wondered how they still allowed the football team to practice out in the heat, in pads, or the volleyball team was allowed to practice in the stiffling hot gym

  My main concern would be for kids who have to walk to and from school. Not all of them have parents who are smart enough to make sure they are dressed appropriately.

  I only had AC for one year of my entire school career, and we were never released early due to heat. I didn't even know that was a thing.

  Yeah, it has happened in recent years. I think only one classroom in our school had AC and that was an interior room with no windows. As far as walking to and from school......I could understand that but the parents make other arrangements when it is raining/storming to bring/drop off kids so why not when it is this cold? And when it is this cold is much easier to predict then if it will be raining at that time the kid is walking to/from school..

  Kids spending a few minutes walking in the rain to school will manage. Walking when it's -20 degrees outside is dangerous.

  Most rural school districts do not have walkers but they cancel anyways. Those with long driveways usually have Mom parked at the end of it in a toasty SUV where their Johnny or Susie is in light clothing ready to make the 12ft dash into the bus. No kid wants to enter the school or clutter their locker with a parka and mittens. #Notcool
  
  Where I live you have the private Amish schools who never cancel and wrap their kids like mummies and send them out on US Rt 62 to walk in a pack on the side of snow covered roads. #Fools
  
  I am not that old (42) I can't remember one time school was cancelled because of the temperature or wind chill. Pretty sure those weather conditions existed back in the 80's. I had a about a 50ft walk from my front door to the bus as a teenager I would sleep until the last possible second then hit the shower so I did not stink for the babes toss on a coat and barely make the bus. My hair back when I had it was wet when I would leave. I remember mornings it was so cold my hair froze while I was walking to the bus. No way a winter cap was going to mess up my styled locks.
  
  Most days I drive my youngest to school in the morning on the way to work. When the line forms up and I come to a halt I tell my son to get out and I pass all the pussies who feel the need to drop precious off 15ft from the front door. My son is not going to succumb to the elements making that hundred foot dash. And what with these kids wearing shorts in cold weather?

  -15 with a -27 wind chill today and schools are in. They were out yesterday and not nearly as cold. I know this is a tough decision for districts but does not seem to be much of a rule of thumb used.
