The Wire is more like a TV novel, and you aren't going to get a nice begining, middle and end to each episode. Every episode does build characters though, and every season builds on the overall story. You have to be patient, because what may be an uneventful episode will pay off a few seasons later when you something happens and you actually care about that character because they took the time to build them up.

I love Landsman on that show. His witty remarks, constant eating of crap food, speeches at the cops wakes, and heart with the Bubbles incident are so great. He is a great character.

It wasn't shot in HD, it was shot in 4:3. So you'll be waiting forever. They did just remaster it into 16:9, and edited everything to look better and re-ran the entire series last month. It's not true HD, but better than the original and DVDs. I have the DVD boxset and I will buy the Blu-Ray when it comes out.

You can find the new version on HBO Go and digital purchase.

Marlo is a lot of things, but I don't think bitch is one of them.

Agreed. The character development in this series is incredible.

I'll have to see if I can find the box set used then.

I think she also recently died.

My buddy saw "Detective Greggs" at the airport.

The series definitely started out better than it ended. They lost me when they started creating serial murderers etc. It was also one of the more accurate shows depicting police work.

    No she didn't.

I agree that the final season was the weakest, but it was still pretty damn good even with the fake serial killer.

The fake serial killer plot takes a lot of criticism and I see why, but it also was there to serve a point. It took the cops creating a fake serial killer, to get the resources to bust a real one.

yeah I just felt like they created the story line to last for a few more seasons then wham, they found out they need to end it all of a sudden.

This isn't true at all. Nothing is really "shot in 4:3" unless it is shot on videotape. The entire series was shot on 35mm film, which is of course a widescreen format. It was then edited and aired in 4:3 because that's how they chose to air it at the time. With the remasters they went back and scanned the original 35mm film. And yes, film=HD.

Is this worth purchasing on Amazon? Always heard great things but I don't have HBO.

I'd just get netflix for a month and plow through the DVDs.

Yeah, you can get it, and all HBO shows, via Netflix DVD. Just not steaming.

    Amazon Prime.

Keeping with the drug theme here, the first three seasons of House, M.D., were about as good as television gets. I still thoroughly enjoyed seasons 5 through 8 (4 not so much), but the show definitely fell into decline after the first three. House was just such a phenomenal character played to perfection by Hugh Laurie.

Never have watched The Wire, but always heard great things. This thread has inspired me to finally do it.

Funny mindless show. Gets really stupid really fast, though.
