Hard Water
-
sportchamppsJust found out we have hard water in our house. It's actually pretty bad it ate through the hot water heating element in less then a year.
Does anyone have any recommendations for a softening system. How much do they cost to buy and install. -
Ironman92Not sure....never ever had a problem but my friends at work have hard water where they live and it ruins everything.
Definitely need a water softener. -
HitsRusWhen you consider this is the water in your house that you have to drink and live with ... I 'd get your water analysed and have the pros suggest a system of softeners /filters.

mhs95_06Get one that meters the water use and regenerates on flow rather than time. Ours can soften about 1000 gal after each regeneration, so it regenerates the night after it gets to 900 gal. Saves a lot of salt, and on your total water use bill since with a timer you have to set it for so many times a week(like Sun, Wed or Sun, Tue, Thur, or just Sun).
Also it is not good to drink the high sodium soft water, so a lot of people have a separate line of hard water going to the cold side of the kitchen sink where they get their drinking and cooking water. Toilets also are common to be on the hard water.
As water heats calcium and magnesium, the minerals in hard water, precipitate out of solution and concentrate in the bottom of your heater, so they should be drained out every couple months, until you get rid of the cloudy water, to extend the life of your heater. -

FatHobbitWe have bad hard water in my area. I have a water softener and use the green bags of salt and have no issues. My softener is 17 years old, so I'm sure there are better things out there now.

Belly35Get the best, this is what you ingest
-
FatHobbitI do know a few people that have a sulfur rod or something that is supposed to make the equipment last longer, but it makes their water smell like shit. I would rather replace my softener more often.

mcburg93You can rent them now if you are not planning living there a long time. I almost suggest renting since most include them coming out and filling them with salt and the price is like 12 a month. I have installed many but have no preference cause they all do the job. You get what you pay for of course.

sportchamppsHey Mcburg do you know anywhere in columbus that rents them

Classyposter58Hard water blows. It's crazy seeing the damage it did to all of the appliances and pipes at my family's old house. Even my Keurig had to really be cleaned out, the amount of minerals in that water is just ridiculous
