Would you buy a puppy...

  My buddies a vet and one of his clients has a litter of labs. We have a 19 month old.. wife is 6 months pregnant... and she wants to go get a puppy. I think it will be way to hectic to have a puppy, but only b/c i know I'll have to do everything. I'll pretty much have to have it trained in 3 months before the baby comes.

  Trained in 3 months? Shouldn't be a problem.

  Been there done that ... not a good idea.
  One dog (19 month old) present family pet with a new born coming is perfect.
  Until the new born is about 3 or 4 years old ..one dog is just fine.
  
  When my second daughter was born we had a 3 year old daughter already and two dogs (one was 8 years old and the other a 1 year old puppy)... hell
  Between the lack of sleep, tripping over the puppy, feeding, taking out, additional vet bills, dog food cost, the eaten carpet, floor and baby toys .... just say no... mofo
  
  Another point it's not right for the puppy ... the lack of attention, training time, out door play time, grooming .... and the inability to travel
  The puppy will be locked in a room or behind a puppy gate 80% of the time… Is that what you want a puppy for?

  I got 3 dogs ages 8,5, and 4 months and a 2 year old boy. It's all about training, our house can be crazy but we make it work. I'd invest in a fenced in yard and you'll be fine.

  If a black lab I'd consider it. If a golden or chocolate lab no way.

  Labs are awesome, probably my favorite breed.
  
  
  That being said...no fucking way. I would wait a year.

  Get a Boxer in a year. Best dog ever for many reasons but fantastic with kids!

  I agree that labs are awesome and I'd definitely recommend getting one. You should easily be able to have it trained before the baby comes. But for me I'd probably wait a couple years to get a dog with already having a 19 month old and a newborn on the way.

  Agreed. With you being like a girl just make sure you help take care of the damned thing!
  Have a 3 month old german shepheard and 11 month old yorkie! Some days ya think the dogs are the only ones who like ya!

  You must have gotten lucky. Boxers are VERY hit or miss. I have two friends, boxer owners, the dogs are a fucking nightmare. Then I have another with an old male boxer and he is awesome.

  I do. He is my dog. I got him 8 years ago and he is the little love of my life. He lived with my parents for about 6 months once, but other than that it's always been him and me.

  Wow. Really? I had a great experience and have three people around me with the same experience. The dogs are great with kids and awesome dogs. You can't be lazy with them. They need time to play and walk and stuff. Maybe that was the problem....

  I think it's just how they are wired. They are very skittish as puppies and some just don't outgrow it.

  I would hold off until the spring (when you get get it outside to potty train more easily) and get a Labradoodle. THE BEST family friendly dog EVER........PERFECT dog for young children.......intelligent breed (potty training them is extremely easy), loyal, loving and non-allergenic!!!!

  I think its a great idea and a chance for you to get out of taking care of the kids and wiping their asses. Tell her you will take over all duties with the dog in exchange for never having to feed your baby or wipe its ass!!

  Great idea in theory, but she already knows he will end up taking care of all the duties of the dog, like most dads/males, in the relationship so no way she would give in to what you propose!@

  Nope. Wouldn't do it if I were you...and I'm in a similar situation.
  
  Got an 8-month old, wife is 18 weeks pregnant, we got a cat, and she's always been harping about a dog. It's so easy for us right now in leaving the house without taking care of no dog. A colleague of mine has some mountain dog and they spend so much time (and money) kenneling it because they travel. Now they are pregnant...good luck with that crap.
  
  I will be staying away from the dogs until we are done having kids AND the kids are old enough to take care of the dogs. I am not stuck taking care of the dogs like I have been at times with the cat (I refuse to touch poop from an animal).
