isadoreTeacher Hurt When Gun Accidentally Shatters Toilet
A Utah elementary school teacher who was carrying a concealed firearm at school was struck by fragments from a bullet and a porcelain toilet when her gun accidentally fired in a faculty bathroom on Thursday, officials said. The sixth-grade teacher at Westbrook Elementary School, in the Salt Lake City suburb of Taylorsville, was injured when the bullet struck a toilet and caused it to explode, Granite School District spokesman Ben Horsley said.
Authorities initially thought the teacher had accidentally shot herself. They now believe she was injured when the bullet and toilet fragments struck her lower leg.
The teacher, identified as Michelle Ferguson-Montgomery, was in good condition Thursday afternoon in a Salt Lake City hospital, Horsley said.
No listed phone number for Ferguson-Montgomery was available.
No other faculty or students witnessed the shooting, but they might have heard the gunshot or seen the teacher as she was helped out of the school to a waiting ambulance, he said.
Classes continued as usual Thursday, and crisis counselors were available, Horsley said.
Officials were still investigating how the gun discharged. "This just appears at this point in time to be an accident," he said.
Horsley said Ferguson-Montgomery has been a teacher with the school for 14 years but he did not have her age. She was carrying her gun legally with a concealed-firearm permit, Horsley said.
Utah is among the few states that allow people with concealed-weapons permits to carry guns in public schools, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. Teachers are not required to disclose that they are carrying a weapon, and administrators are prohibited from asking if they carry or barring them from bringing their weapons.

thavoiceI dont think arming teachers would do that much help actually. As a matter of fact, I said it many times that I felt it would be used or the idea would backfire before it actually stopped a school shooting in its tracks. Either something like this, or a student gets the key to the safe and gets the gun, etc.
Schools are big. They have many hallways and unless ALOT of teachers were armed in pretty much every hallway. I think most would be scared to death to even pick up the weapon. -

sportchamppsHey CC in all seriousness how do you choose. I can't image they advise you to run unless you can actually see the shooter otherwise I'm sure they would be afraid there could be another shooter outside. I'm surprised they give you the choice to flee at all.

BRFAs a 36 year veteran of teaching, I don't believe that teachers should be armed.
I think of many of my old colleagues and they should not have a gun in their hands, especially at a school. -
HitsRusI think somebody in a school should be armed....but they should have more than just "concealed carry" training.

ZunardoHer gun "accidentally" fired?? How?

Johnny: "Honest, Mr. Mason - I didn't murder Marylou's stepfather! But he threatened to stab me with a knife if I didn't stop seeing her. I pulled out my gun - you know, just to scare him off. But he tried to take it from me, we fell on the floor and fought - and it just went off! Honest! You got to believe me, Mr. Mason!" -

If we're going to decide who gets a gun based on testosterone levels, I doubt a 150 lb middle aged dude would be high on the list either.ccrunner609;1654123 wrote:it is common knowledge that womens hormonal makeup during these instances when the "flight or fight" response is required just doesnt measure up to mens. Here in LA, Compton residents are complaining because the school cops now have AR-15s in their patrol cars. They claimed they don't want the city to feel like its a violent city blah blah....did they somehow forget they live in Compton?salto;1654016 wrote:Many inner city schools have armed security and metal detectors too. -

i would volunteer to patrol the schools and I could name 10 other retired veterans, cops, fireman and ems that if organized would volunteer .... 1 or 2 days a week.BRF;1653574 wrote:As a 36 year veteran of teaching, I don't believe that teachers should be armed.

we could pretend to be crossing guards, politians, substitute teachers, janitors, school administrator...... -
TiernanNo way is any SD gonna let armed "volunteers" in its doors. Not saying its a bad idea personally, but the legal risks are so far off the charts it would never be considered.

HereticBelly's solution to every single problem tends to revolve around giving him a gun and letting him handle shit. I admire his consistency.

Thank you Heretic consistency is a good thing . I've handled shit every day in business, in my military career and in my personal life. I take charge, control and make decision…. in the end I take the responciblity right or wrong...Heretic;1654186 wrote:Belly's solution to every single problem tends to revolve around giving him a gun and letting him handle shit. This idea of volunteers may not be the long term solution but right now the school system has nothing but bad ideas and political correctness assholes making no decision until the next nut case goes off the deep end.
help me understand the rational here: We have inexperience local volunteers directing traffic with volunteer 9 year old students, helping hundreds of elementary student cross multiple streets stopping 3000 pounds bullets, driven by in a hurry up gymnastic mom, depressed unemployed dad and lets not for get that aging grandparents with the handicap sticker. That makes perfect common senses usage for volunteers. . -
Classyposter58I'd be cool with them giving me a gun
-
DeyDurkie5Yeah let's not let the dude with an eye patch patrol schools with a gun.
-
TiernanOff duty cops looking to pick up some OT are the only answer to guns in schools period. Not teachers, not ex-special forces volunteers, not administrators with CC training...etc etc. Plenty of cops I'm sure would love to pick up some relative easy OT so lets 'em do it.

Old RiderOrrville has an armed teacher in the high school. He is also a part-time police officer. We also have a school resource officer who is present throughout the day on school property. All of our school cameras are on 24 hr monitoring system linked directly to the police station. I think any/all policies that schools can implement to keep our kids safe are WELL worth the money/effort!
