Orpheum Theater, New York

'Stomp' has once again entered my sights as a must see show. The last time I went to see this brilliant display was here locally in Columbus back in 2005. This time around, I'd love to make it a special trip with my oldest daughter and her mother.

The more my daughter gets into drama and stage play, the more I think she would absolutely love and appreciate the artistic talents that this show has to offer. So here's the plan...

Keep her completely in the dark about the entire thing. Load her and her mother up in the van on a Friday and just head East. 9 hours later, we arrive in New York at the hotel. We do some sight seeing, hit the 8pm show Saturday at the Orpheum Theatre, then back to the hotel. Get up early Sunday and head back to Ohio.

    So there's the simple version.

The hard part is working out the logistics as far as the stay in NY. It'll be our first time in the Big Apple and I'm wondering where we should stay. Do I long term park somewhere and taxi for everything else? What about spending? Cash, card or travelers cheque? Do I avoid certain areas? Etc etc.

Soooo, any frequent travelers here have any good advise?

Any locals have any good tips?

Total budget is $1,000 and the tickets are $375 not including any other surcharges.

    Wut do???

    Hope this helps.

Traveler cheques for a New York weekend? Lol

Just drive, park, taxi around the city, use a debit/credit card, and enjoy.

That's not much time to see a whole lot. I'd do some research and find 2-3 must see things and find a nice place for dinner before the show.

Also, regarding parking, just bite the bullet and put your car in a nearby garage or with the hotel if they offer. You'll pay for it, but a lot less hassle.

The Statue of Liberty is 15 minutes from the theater, so there's that.

And yeah, it's a weekend trip for the sole purpose of seeing Stomp where it originated - NY. It was planned on a whim, although I was thinking about waiting for the Cleveland show which isn't until January.

    Meh. Fuck Cleveland.

If you are only staying one night and your budget is $1,000, I would advise not even staying in NYC. Find a hotel around Newark Airport and take one of the many transit options available into the city (bus, train, car service), leave your luggage at the hotel (even if you can't check in yet they will take your bags) and enjoy the day in NYC, with 3 people you can easily take the subway to the midtown business district/Central Park from Port Authority or the Christopher Street station from the PATH and take a cab to the show. The expense will be a car service back to the hotel in Jersey.

But all transit options are completely safe, there will be some differences in costs.

    I'll check into that, Manhattan.

I'm thinking the Statue of Liberty and the 9/11 Memorial are on the top of my list right now.
