Running an outdoor spigot...

Call before you dig. So they say.

I'm beginning to think Justin is the creator of this very famous picture. Quality looks about the same.

I think you should walk your spigot first. Then work it up to a jog before you attempt to run it.

    Safety first!

You mean the sketch I spent 30 seconds on isn't a masterpiece? No way!

    Lighten up, Francis.

Tell the plumbers you'll do the trenching, backfill and buy the material. All you want is a labor price. That will save you significant money.

However, you need someone other than OUPS (they won't come on private property) to come out and locate any under ground lines...because based on your drawing you will probably encounter some. You have to hand dig 3' on both sides of those.

A walk behind trencher will set you back $200. I just put 2 in for our ball fields, material will cost you less than $500 (we ran about 400' of water line for that much).

This guy is in the construction business (legos) so I'd listen to what he says.

    Yes they do.

I think this is a better idea of what we are dealing with at Justin's house instead of his terrible drawing.

    No, they do not.

    I don't have a garage.

What if I just ran a line out of the back of our basement, not buried, and attach it to one of the posts of the deck instead of running it all the way to the back of the yard? I realize this could freeze, but couldn't I just put a valve on the inside of the basement and turn the water off to the outside and then drain the line before cold weather hits?

Dont believe that is true. I know for a couple places I worked for we would call and request OUPS to come out and do a locate on their lines even in private property. Pretty sure they had a campaign about it.

OUPS is just a notification center. They don't do the actual line marking. They just contact the utility companies after you have called them.

Is this rhetorical, b/c it sounds like it is something you already know that you can do.

...why not just move your trailer....errr...house closer to the shed and save all the time & expense?

Not rhetorical, just throwing the idea out there for feedback. I'm certain it can be done, just not sure if it's a good idea or not.

In my opinion, as long as you made sure you bled the lines/pipes, you would be fine.

If you plan on moving sometime in the future this might be your best bet so you dont invest a bunch of money in an outside spigot. You can still do the one on the house relatively easy with out much costs. If I had to guess you might have 100 in materials if you do the work yourself.

After decoding the picture, I noticed that you would need to bust out your sidewalk prior to trenching.

Also, the deck isnt picture in your...umm, blueprint so I couldnt analyze that.

    Hope this helps.

(I also didnt see porch/porch furniture.)

Not that it matters any more since I am likely not going with my original plan but I wouldn't have to go under the sidewalk to do it.
